Step free access, Liverpool Street station

Or escalator free access

havkng some trouble confirming if there is this access from train councourse to Central Line (for a return journey).

I think part of the issue is whether or not lifts are working?

also, if there's access to the Hammersmith & City line, I could cross the platform at Mile End amd change to the central line there. This is for Wednesday this week.

thank you for any advice - MNers have been far more helpful than any apps!

I usually use Elizabeth line as it’s all step free access. Central line I don’t think is very good for step free. Not sure where you’re going but the lizzie line covers most of central London that the central line does, although you may have slightly further walks when back above ground given less stops on Lizzie line

Stratford a good place to change too as whole station is step free. I go into ldn from Essex so I change off the central line at Stratford and onto Lizzie line there. its the same platform so super easy!

EssexMamisoa · 23/04/2023 19:58

*Assume obvious but Lizzie line = Elizabeth line

mynameiscalypso · 23/04/2023 19:58

I don't think there's escalator free access to the central line. For what it's worth, all of the lifts to the Elizabeth Line were broken when I was there this week too.

EssexMamisoa · 23/04/2023 20:00

I’ve had good experiences on Elizabeth line and Liv St has several different lifts so hopefully the pp just had bad luck! Terrible if it’s breaking already!!!

Oh, so do you just go across the platform of the Central Line and the train will go from Stratford to Liverpool Street?

this should be on the tfl site, but it's told me to go to Bond Street (from East) and then go back on myself to Liverpool Street. I thought that was a bit strange.

thank you everyone, it is sad the Lizzie line lifts are failing already.

actually, all I need to know is "is there step free access to the central Line at Liverpool Street" and it's strangely hard to get an answer to that question using official apps.

You should be able to put in your requirements in the TFL Plan Your Journey. The Elizabeth Line goes from Stratford to Liverpool Street. I've not had any problems with lifts.

Chersfrozenface · 23/04/2023 20:26

If you're on Twitter there's an account called TfL Access which tells you when lifts are out of action and when they're repaired, when stations are closed and then reopened, etc.

So if you are travelling westbound, ie Essex to London on central line…:

The central line and Lizzie line westbound are on the same platform at Stratford, ie central line may be platform 3, Lizzie line platform 4. So you literally get off central line at Stratford and walk about five steps and get on the Lizzie line. No need for lifts or anything (but Stratford has lifts galore if for some reason you did need them). Lizzie line then goes to Liv st which is step free at Liv St for Lizzie line.

It’s the same on your return, ie London to Essex, you just walk about five steps at Stratford to switch from Lizzie line to central line.

Lizzie line at liv st has several lift options and I have always found super easy. I’ve done it several times.

The answer to this: actually, all I need to know is "is there step free access to the central Line at Liverpool Street" and it's strangely hard to get an answer to that question using official apps. Is no - I am 95% certain I am right.

EssexMamisoa · 23/04/2023 20:28

That’s wrong. Get the Lizzie line.

When you search on tfl maybe you haven’t selected all the transport options, overground? As I don’t think Lizzie line is technically the tube. So your search may be excluding the Lizzie line.

Unless you are searching on a day the Lizzie line is closed.

That app is telling me not to go that way, but to go to Bond Street and go back on myself. It's not the first time I've found strange things there

I have used the Twitter account but I now think they answer all queries with the step free pdf. In fairness, London Transport is huge so maybe they're struggling to keep up.

thank you.

I've got all the options selected but even narrowing it down to Stratford to Liv Street, it says no. It's Wednesday 26th. Maybe there's lift work or something.

but the "change at Stratford" option remains a mystery.

Not unless it’s changed very recently. There are lifts from the main station to the tube station concourse where the ticket machines are, but not down to the central line platforms.

toomuchicecream · 23/04/2023 20:39

When I phoned the TfL and chose the disabled access option (or whatever it’s called) I very quickly got through to a very helpful person who double checked her answer and phoned me back, so that’s what I recommend !

Where are you coming from? And where are you anting to end up?

There is no step free access to central line at Liverpool Street as far as I know.

At Stratford it is step free between central line and Elizabeth line but not if you are coming in by train.

GingerAle1 · 23/04/2023 20:52

Sorry, I just say step free because "escalator free"seems to confuse people

I can use steps as long as not spiral

so, going from Snaresbrook to Liverpool Street where I need to use the Old Broad Street exit, ideally, as my meeting is on that road.

then back again.

I cannot use an escalator even with help, due to vertigo and other balance problems. I use a stick but walking is fine.

OP posts:
KatzP · 23/04/2023 20:52

I think the central line and Elizabeth line are step free to the platform at Stratford but not step free to the train. That's possibly why it is not showing as an option for you on the journey planner.
If you check the TFL step free map it shows which are to platform only and which are to the train. If if you need fully step free only the train I think you can try and arrange for assistance. I've seen staff add a ramp to help passengers in wheelchairs from train to platform.

SquareRootOfAllEvil · 23/04/2023 20:57

I’d definitely change at Stratford - either for the Elizabeth line where there’s a lift and steps up to the main Liverpool Street station or to get National Rail from Stratford to Liverpool Street

Cross posts in that case you will be ok changing at Stratford to the Elizabeth line. You could also change to the main trains that come in for further out in Essex and go into the main Liverpool st station rather than Elizabeth line part. That may be closer to exit you need. (Fellow Snaresbrook local).

feelingrubbish2023 · 23/04/2023 21:08

In that case I'd change at Stratford for the Elizabeth line and use the lift to get upto the main station. I presume there must also be lifts inside the station to get to street level but I don't know where they are. Hopefully someone on here may know.

The Lizzie line lifts at Livserpopl street go direct from the platform to street level. There are two options.

I believe all of Stratford station is step free as each platform has 2 x lifts on it.

GingerAle1 · 23/04/2023 21:12

Katz oh, so they are counting the step on to the train? That makes sense. I can use that, thank you though, that's explained a lot.

I'm staying with a friend in Snaresbrook and she didn't know either so it was all a bit baffling.

thanks everyone, that's so helpful. 😁MN saves the day again. Now I can go back to panicking about my presentation!
