Ereaders and Borrowbox?

StuckInTheSameOld · 23/04/2023 12:11

My library uses Borrowbox for ebooks and audio books. So I'm looking to get an ereader as I've never had one before. Does anyone know which ones work with Borrowbox? And what would you recommend to buy?

I have a Kindle Fire which works for both.

StuckInTheSameOld · 23/04/2023 12:46

Do use the Amazon Prime or Kindle Unlimited too? I don't want to limit my choice for free books. To be honest, I thought the local library would have more selection for ebooks.

I have the BorrowBox app on my iPhone, though I mainly use it for audiobooks.

Check to see if your library also uses Libby.

JanBlue · 23/04/2023 13:46

I have a kobo to use with Borrowbox

ElizaCBennett · 23/04/2023 15:23

I use BorrowBox on my iPad.

AlrightJulia · 23/04/2023 15:35

I find Libby very unstable - it crashes constantly. Annoying as that's the app my library uses.

JoeLovesGina · 23/04/2023 15:38

I think she Libby all the time and have never had an issue with it.

Borrowbox doesn't have anywhere near as many books as Libby so I'd try to get that if you can OP.

AnotherEmma · 23/04/2023 15:41

I looked into this recently. I have a (very old) Kindle and my library lends out ebooks via Libby. I couldn't work out a way to get an ebook onto my Kindle! After Googling it and reading a couple of articles, I have concluded that you need a Kobo if you want to use it to read ebooks borrowed from the library. (Nb I'm assuming you're in the UK - apparently in the USA you can read borrowed ebooks on Kindle, but not here.)

hexsnidgett · 23/04/2023 15:45

Borrowbox works best with the app so you are best choosing an ereader or tablet that can run apps, rather than a proper ereader like a kindle or a kobo.
Because kobos are owned by libby (or the other way around?) They work seamlessly together, so I borrow a book on my phone with the libby app and then it appears on my kobo automatically.
With borrowbox I have to connect the kobo to my laptop and transfer the file to Adobe digital edition before moving to the kobo. Not convenient.
It's worth knowing libraries differ around the country and that they don't all require you to live locally, or to go into the library to sign up.

StuckInTheSameOld · 23/04/2023 15:45

I'm pretty sure my library just uses BorrowBox. I tried logging in via Libby, but the only things that came up were magazines, which are no good to me.
So with a Kobo, is that the same way as just downloading the BorrowBox app? Also, do they have lots of free books like Amazon/Kindle have?

Kobe is doing a Kobe plus, working similar to Amazon KU for £8.99/month. Not sure how good their catalogue is though, you may need to search.

Proper Kindle like the Paperwhite does not work with library borrowing, a fire or any tablet where you download an app does. But I am not keen on reading on a screen for so long so I still stick with my Kindle Paperwhite.

reluctantbrit · 23/04/2023 15:59

Oh, and if you read authors in Amazon KU, you won't find them anywhere else. These books are Amazon exclusives.

JessicaBrassica · 23/04/2023 16:04

I use borrow box on my phone. I have kindle on my phone too. It's a pain now that I'm trying not to take an internet enabled device to bed with me though.

Yes I use Amazon Books on Prime and am on the mailing list for Bookbub which sends you which kindle books are on offer for 99p each day and often buy those. Don't have kindle unlimited but could do on the fire!

ExtremelyDetermined · 23/04/2023 16:15

I just use my phone.

Madcats · 23/04/2023 16:21

You might need to watch a couple of Youtube videos, but you can put Borrowbox onto a Kindle Fire and get it to stream (from a phone or Kindle Fire) onto an Echo Show or Bluetooth speaker.

It won't work with a Kindle Paperwhite etc.

Libby used to work, but I think my library stopped subscribing.

FionaFlop · 23/04/2023 16:26

I have a LikeBook Mars which is E-ink and works with both kindle and BorrowBox. Like you I read a lot and wanted to be able to access all ebooks. It was quite hard to find, I think it was about £200 on Amazon a couple of years ago, and I'm still very happy with it.

AnotherEmma · 23/04/2023 16:28

Will Libby work with my ereader?
Yes!
Kobo
You can continue to browse for, borrow, and read library ebooks directly on your Kobo ereader.
NOOK
You can use libbyapp.com to download ebooks and transfer them (via Adobe Digital Editions) to an ereader. Learn more about transferring ebooks to ereaders on Libby Help.
Kindle
If you have a Kindle reader, you can send books to your Kindle (U.S. only) from Libby on a supported device, like an iPhone, Android tablet, or computer.
Learn more about your Kindle options on Libby Help.
Kindle Fire
If you have a Kindle Fire tablet, you can sideload the app by following our instructions.

Can I transfer books to an ereader from Libby?

SadCelticBunny · 23/04/2023 16:38

I use my iPhone and my iPad to access Borrowbook and Audible.
I also listen to audiobooks on YouTube.

Great resources, though I find I can't be bothered with continuing with many books these days!
I am in my 60s, I have been reading since I was 3 so I have read many, many books.
I often shout, Get on with it!! and press return! 📚📚📚

JoeLovesGina · 26/04/2023 19:33

Our library lets people from outside the area join with a "lite" membership, which means they can use the online services.

So you may find you can use Libby by joining a library in a different area.

StuckInTheSameOld · 27/04/2023 16:14

That would be good. I'll have to ring around about Libby then. I like the idea of the Kindle reader because it's a different light to a tablet. I'm reading on my phone at the moment but find my eyes can't go for as long as they could an actual book.

Madcats · 29/04/2023 18:55

Whatever e reader you end up with, I've signed up to a website called BookBub where you specify your reader/app and book interests and it alerts you to free/big discounted books on offer through your vendor each day.

Fiction & Non-Fiction and it isn't just obscure authors.

drspouse · 29/04/2023 18:59

You can convert from Borrowbox to Kindle format but I can't tell you to Google the Calibre app.
