What gets rid of limescale??

Itsnotclean · 21/04/2023 12:54

So we’ve just moved and shower has a lot of limescale on it

I've tried a few things and the most effective was good old vinegar and lemon…. But surely there must be an actual cleaning spray that’s as good as this?!

please help me find something as I’m fed up of looking at the limescale

(also I know this is a very boring problem😅)

Have you tried Viakal?

TheCrystalPalace · 21/04/2023 12:56

The best one I've come across is the Hg range.
It's not perfect but then, nothing else I've tried is. It's the best of the bunch, in my opinion.

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/04/2023 12:56

I use HG limescale remover. It's brilliant stuff. I live in an exceptionally hard water area so need something effective. Also poke the holes in the shower head with those little interdental brushes so that it clears them completely.

Cilit bang. Leave it on a few minutes then wipe it down

We live in Gloucestershire and our water is ridiculously hard. I've never found anything in 25 years that gets my shower screens even remotely clear but the best of the options is Viakal spray and then drying using an old fashioned chamois leather. It's the drying that makes the difference, I think.

ClemFandango1 · 21/04/2023 13:02

I do viakal, scrub with a non scratch sponge (scrub daddy) then dry with microfibre cloth. This has cleared the build up on the shower screen, but the taps are still linescaley and I don't know how to shift it. Guess I could soak a rag in viakal or vinegar and leave wrapped round overnight.

Sparklfairy · 21/04/2023 13:03

HG - the screw cap bottle, not the spray. It's amazing. It makes the limescale glow white and fizz, and after a few mins you can clean it off.

I'm an ex-cleaner in a very hard water area. Some student end of tenancy cleans had some very heavy duty limescale and this stuff made light work of them!

JeannieAlogy · 21/04/2023 13:09

I remove small patches from taps by rubbing with a 2p coin. Literally use the coin edge to rub over the limescale surface and it comes away.
Doesn't work as well on very thick build-up.

I’ve always lived in a very hard water area.

On shower heads and the kettle I use Oust sachets - leave the shower head socking in the solution as long as the packet says you can. Then rinse and repeat with a second sachet if it’s still not clean.

Viakal spray is the best for taps, shower screens etc - spray on a leave to soak for at least 10 minutes, then wipe with a wet cloth and dry with a dry cloth.

Regular cleaning keeps on top of limescale. If it’s built up for ages you need to start a regular routine to get it clean again and keep on top of it.

soaking - not socking!

Crikeyalmightey · 21/04/2023 13:33

Don't get that HG cleaner on your toilet seat (or anything like that) it will take the shiny finish off and leave a mark.

I second Oust for descaling shower heads and kettles. Take the shower head off and let it soak for as long as possible, rinse and put back.

Surprisingly, I find Lidl's W5 brand limescale remover really good and cheaper than Viakal etc. One of the cleaners at work put me on to it...

Why do you need a cleaning spray if vinegar is working for you?

I put vinegar in a spray bottle for cleaning glass and limescale. I also have a spray bottle with vinegar, bit of washing up liquid and some water for general cleaning.

Clementineorsatsuma · 21/04/2023 13:48

Aldi limes cake remover is excellent

This is a very good point. I guess it doesn’t smell as nice 🙈

First you need an acid based product like toilet cleaner, viakal, cloth soaked in vinegar

Leave it on for a good while

Then you need the right tool to remove it - limescale is hard so you need something hard to remove it.

People blame the product when it's the tool you need to change

Purrfecto · 21/04/2023 14:00

Depends how bad the build up is, may need to be scrapped off. I put on a mixture of washing up liquid and white vintager and leave on for 10 mins.

The only thing that properly works is getting a water softener installed, had that in our previous house and had no limescale.
