Child benefit

Hello

It has only just been pointed out to me that we can claim child benefit for our 8 year old, for some reason I thought if you were a higher rate tax payer you couldn’t claim it. Now I know we can, does anyone know if it can be back dated? Someone at my work swears blind they have a friend who claimed quite a few years back recently but all I can find is three months backdated only.

It’s only a few weeks/ months you can claim back from
memory

If there is an adult earning over £60k you aren't eligible. Over £50k its a reduced rate.

They will only backdate it for 12 weeks/ 3 months from application. Unless they have made an error with your application.

I had twins and they only gave me child benefit for one of them ( I thought this was due to two child benefit rule) which doesn't apply to child benefit. I realised when they were five I put in an application for twin 2 and a covering letter to say I had applied for both and my form was verified by registrar but had only been awarded for one twin. I think someone missed the tick box that said I would like to apply for more than one child. They gave me five years worth of child benefit in one go which was nice.

No it is only backdated three months. If you are a hr tax payer you pay back some if you or dp/dh earn over 50k but under 60k, all if over 60 (after pension and certain other deductions). You can register but opt out of receiving payments if you would pay all of it back.
