If you are an introvert, what are your hobbies and interests?

I've found myself with a bit more spare time on my hands as the DC are getting older and would like to have a few more interests. I'm quite introverted and find the idea of organised fun pretty horrific. I also struggle with activities that are a weekly commitment at a particular time, as I and DH work erratic hours at times. DC are also pretty busy and needs lots of running about. The only group activity I've really enjoyed is singing in a choir.

I can't do many of the craft/handy activities that others enjoy at home, as I'm dyspraxic and only have functional vision in one eye. Basically, if a six year old would struggle then so would I!

At the moment, I enjoy cooking (would love to extend this but not sure how), reading (I try to get to a monthly book club), walking with the dogs, yoga and pilates, swimming, gardening, learning French (coffee break French podcast), politics and current affairs (well, listening to Alastair and Rory while I walk the dogs) and culture (I try to get to galleries and concerts with friends a few times a year). We also absolutely love travelling as a family. I'd like to try creative writing but have no idea how to get started.

Any ideas about other hobbies I might enjoy, or ways I can extend these interests (DH says no more booking holidays!)?

Pretty much all the things you do OP. Plus the odd coffee with a friend ( I do have more than one friend, but i prefer seeing them individually, or occasionally a small group)

Choral singing
Crochet (also dyspraxic and it took several attempts for me to get the hang of it!)
Going for walks in the countryside

Mine are more or less exactly your list!

For creative writing, I have done a few of the Strathclyde Blaze online courses in their adult learning department and recommend them.

I would love to do a cooking course although also struggle with any weekly commitment.

whateveryousay · 20/04/2023 17:30

I go to the gym, put headphones on, and lift weights. Lovely, solitary activity!

Eyelashesoffire · 20/04/2023 17:30

Gardening

Xrays · 20/04/2023 17:32

Crochet, true crime books and documentaries, gardening, and lots of brisk walking with my headphones in listening to all sorts of music.

Howdoyou · 20/04/2023 17:32

Running, I run quite a lot. Exercise in general tbh, do a lot of different YouTube videos like weight lifting and Pilates.
Reading.
Visiting art galleries and museums.
Watching Lucy Worsley on iplayer
Podcasts

BunsenBurnerBaby · 20/04/2023 17:33

Couch to 5k and then running
Reading
Meeting friends for coffee
Would love to sing in a choir or take dance lessons or art lessons but can’t commit regular time yet
Growing veg (to go with cooking?)

But mostly reading TBH

Fibonacci13 · 20/04/2023 17:34

Running, gardening, bird watching (not so much an activity but I've started to take an interest in at least identifying the birds before the dog scares them away!), art galleries, reading, cooking

Creative writing is a lovely solitary hobby but there are some friendly threads on MN which might interest you on the creative writing board.

All you need to get started is your phone, or laptop or a notebook and a pencil or pen! I highly recommend a fat little book called Writing Down The Bones. You can dip in and out of it wherever and whenever you want, or read it cover to cover. It’s highly encouraging and will definitely help you get started.

I also quite liked my weather station and that takes up a fair bit of time doing all the monitoring and things. Old one died so I've asked for a new one for my birthday :)

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 20/04/2023 17:36

I love history, the garden, watching the birds and wildlife and making things. Drawing and art. I’m good with a sewing machine. Love being on my own.

DinosaurOfFire · 20/04/2023 17:39

I like: cosy computer games, rpg computer games, gardening, making art, and reading.

Snowflake760 · 20/04/2023 17:52

Daft as it sounds, running. I can go out by myself, whenever I like, often before work with no music, just alone with my thoughts or the effort of breathing ! I can also go to my running club for a little bit of interaction, safe in the knowledge that 90% of the time I’ll just be running, with no pressure to interact. Its a quick chat before, then a few words over stretches.. job done

ittakes2 · 20/04/2023 18:08

cooking classes online?

lilyfire · 20/04/2023 18:13

Pretty much same as yours plus running and listening to audiobooks. I also sometimes do short courses online. Really enjoyed a Shakespeare one where we read and studied a play and have done philosophy/history ones. Normally 4/6 weeks long once a week so not too much of a commitment.

DoingALeicester · 20/04/2023 18:18

Family tree, podcasts, and following the football (lifelong thing though), running.

Dillydollydingdong · 20/04/2023 18:22

Knitting, crochet, reading, playing with grandchildren, surfing the net, chatting with friends and relatives, tv

AlexisR · 20/04/2023 18:28

Drawing/ painting are lovely relaxing hobbies to get into. Even with your dyspraxia and vision loss you can do them, as it doesn't have to be a realistic style - you're only limited by your own expectations. It can be abstract and creative.

I know someone who paints landscapes from the tiniest images she has taken on her mobile phone and then pixellates, because it helps her see the light and dark rather than the detail.

Do give it a go if you fancy it :) I recommend gouache or oil paints, and just pull up a landscape of a place you love (you've probably got some photos from your walks!) and give it a go.

Mycatisalwaysangry · 20/04/2023 18:28

I like reading all this. There’s a sense of quiet enjoyment in the suggestions made.

orangetriangle · 20/04/2023 18:29

Sewing, baking ( I had a BakedIn subscription for a while which was nice, got to try some things I’d never thought of), reading, gardening (mostly vegetables and fruit, the satisfaction of seeing things grow and then eating them is wonderful).

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 20/04/2023 18:33

History (love royal history & victorians), reading, gardening, and cosy gaming like animal crossing, Stardew valley etc.
