I want to buy some gifts for our lovely neighbours but for some reason have been told different dates for Eid by different people.

Can anyone clarify please?

Depends on the sighting of the moon this evening (or lack thereof).

No one can give you a definitive answer as of this moment.

tokyotea · 20/04/2023 13:54

It depends on sighting of the new moon. If it's sighted tonight it will be Friday. If not, then Saturday. Announcements will be made later this evening.

listsandbudgets · 20/04/2023 15:20

Thank you. No wonder there is a bit of confusion. I will pick up some gifts this evening and await developments Smile

There’s also a bit of a religious/political element, often different sects choose different days just to confuse matters further... so you still might not get a definite answer online.

It won’t matter if you’re a day early, I’m sure they’ll be pleased with the thought.

We had a message from school asking when parents knew it would be celebrated to let them know if children would be absent. So seems undefined this year.

Wenfy · 20/04/2023 15:54

Both days depending on the form of Islam they follow. But as it’s a weekend families will be in celebration mode from Thursday so don’t worry about it

It's always undefined isn't it? If it is cloudy so the moon isn't seen then it gets delayed? Is that right?

Where does the new moon need to be seen?

BusterGonad · 20/04/2023 16:09

Where I am it's tomorrow.

listsandbudgets · 21/04/2023 09:54

Thank you. Well as far as I can tell it's today (we live opposite a mosque and the car park has been full since about 6am) so I will pop something round to neighbours in a bit.

Yes - in London my colleague is celebrating today (she thought tomorrow so it's come as a bit of a shock!)

WhiteFire · 21/04/2023 10:01

DS said last night that he would be the only boy in one of his classes today as the others will be celebrating Eid.

JaneJeffer · 21/04/2023 10:36

Not being funny but how do you see the new moon?

mamacattiva · 21/04/2023 10:37

Saturday

Skinnermarink · 21/04/2023 10:41

I hope it’s Saturday, our upstairs neighbours really go for it with a night long family party and I’m away on Saturday night with the baby. Please be Saturday 🙏🏻

littleducks · 21/04/2023 10:55

@JaneJeffer the sighting is off the new crescent moon not the "new moon" as considered by English/western? Astronomy

It depends on where the family would expect the moon to be sighted, it was apparently impossible in astronomy terms to sight in UK last night so lots celebrating tomorrow if there follow rules on local sighting need. Equally large numbers in immigrant communities will be more likely to celebrate if moon is sighted in their country of origin when their family actual is etc. And some will accept sightings in countries that are near/shall time difference so share sand night etc. Some will accept only"naked" eye sightings whereas others happy with use of powerful telescope which can also cause a difference

x2boys · 21/04/2023 10:58

Isn't it also.dependent on their particular imman?
that's what an ex Muslim colleague told me ?

JaneJeffer · 21/04/2023 10:59

Thanks @littleducks it seems a bit confusing!

@JaneJeffer it's not so complicated in Muslim majority countries but in others can be a bit awkward to try and explain see this sketch

For purposes of gift giving which I agree with previous poster who says anytime over the dates would be much appreciated

What a lovely kind thing to do!

@littleducks Grin

listsandbudgets · 21/04/2023 12:57

@littleducks It must be extremely frustrating at times Grin

Just popped round to neighbours who insisted on stuffing me with food - good thing I don't work on Fridays as not sure I'll be moving again until I need to collect DS. It looked like they'd cooked for an army!!
