I'm addicted to falling asleep listening to YouTube

This started about 5 years ago. I started watching YouTube on my tablet in bed before going to sleep. Now I can't not watch a video before falling asleep. I wake up multiple times in the night and have to listen to a video (I use earphones and don't look at the screen) otherwise I just lie there and my mind starts worrying about stuff. I usually listen to something like a documentary and fall asleep again. I can't seem to stop doing it. Wtf is wrong with me.

Definitely worse habits out there like drinking alcohol every evening. Listening to YouTube isn't hurting anyone.

Waitingfortaco · 19/04/2023 21:17

I fall asleep listening to true crime murder podcasts and so does DD. If I wake in the night, I turn white noise on. This started when I had the fan on last summer and found the noise soothing.

Me too. Although usually bbc or podcasts. Usually the archers / gardening programmes / Attenborough that I've watched before etc.

Both my kids listen to things to go to sleep too. I don't see the problem tbh. They've managed to do without when on sleepovers / school trips etc

Sweetnhappy1 · 19/04/2023 21:23

This sounds like the adult version of reading bedtime stories to children to get them wind down to go to sleep. People have been doing this since time began.

AnxiousFlowerpot · 19/04/2023 21:26

Wow. This is great to hear and a comfort!
Recently been listening to the Paul Temple mystery plays. Good old fashioned murder😁

Me too, I have Google podcasts and follow a few radio shows, just light entertainment and banal chat, stops me thinking of stuff that would otherwise keep me awake, always reset it for another 30 mins if I wake in the night too. Not sure I'd fall asleep without it. The timer function on Google podcasts is very user friendly

I listen to those 10 hour long rainstorm and thunder videos and if the WiFi is down I can't sleep!

@MyMachineAndMe I have an app on my phone that I use to sleep. It's just called rain sounds. It has lots of different rain/storm settings, and you don't need to be connected to the internet to listen to them. It could help for the times the WiFi is down.

I listen to history you tubes, make sure they are about 20 minutes and I’m off before it ends. But, it has to be the right voice, not American, not too high pitched.

DRS1970 · 19/04/2023 22:05

Me too!

wobblyweasel · 19/04/2023 22:06

I listen to true crime podcasts to help me sleep, although there are some (Mr Ballen in particular) where I have to stay awake to find out what happened!

HundredMilesAnHour · 19/04/2023 22:07

I listen to Diary of a CEO podcasts on YouTube in bed every night. I have to have something playing (spoken word rather than music) or my mind races. I don't worry but I think about everything and anything. I've been like this since childhood. I'm 53 now and was recently diagnosed with ADHD - which explains the racing thoughts and insomnia (amongst many other things).

I definitely recommend Diary of a CEO. Steven B interviews some fascinating and surprising people.

Funnily enough, I can't sleep with an American accent either. I don't know why but it has to be a boring English accent!

Someone on here recommended The Behavior Panel. Jeez,I'm obsessed.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/04/2023 22:16

Same! Also started this about 5 or so years ago. 🤦‍♀️ I started with self-hypnosis videos and now I load a playlist of all sorts of videos from cooking to medical.
ie Bon Appetit, Food Wishes, Mama Doctor Jo, Doctorly, Doctor Mike.

There’s nothing wrong with you! When I’m going through an insomnia phase I do the same with podcasts or sleep stories to help me fall asleep. If it’s working well for you then that’s all that matters!

What are sleep stories?

On the other end of the spectrum, and a different topic, I'm Canadian but set Siri to a British male voice because it sounds so reasonable. 🤷‍♀️

Yes! I only download books from Audibles if they have an English narrator.

Forgot about those! Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to add one to my list again.

powershowerforanhour · 19/04/2023 22:25

I like the rain sounds videos, and sometimes birdsong ones.

HighInfidelity · 19/04/2023 22:28

LittleEsme · 19/04/2023 22:18

What are sleep stories?

Stories that have been written to help you fall asleep basically. I used to listen to them on the Calm app when I had it and now use the Get Sleepy podcast. I also like The Sleepy Bookshelf podcast but that one is published books being read in chapters each night rather than specific stories to help you fall asleep. I think it’s the soothing voice that helps.

Thank you! I'll have a look at that. It might even save my phone battery a bit as YouTube can be a bit of a drain. I do need it all night though; if it stops it wakes me up! Like others, I wear a headband with built in Bluetooth headphones with the buttons on the front. It stops me from listening to dh's breathing, clicking and snoring and wanting to smother him with my pillow!

I don't wear a headband, I use a Roberts pillow speaker (it actually came free with my Roberts radio). I love it!

I do the same with the radio on my phone. I replay programmes (usually Radio 4 money or food programmes because they're never "exciting") and set them to turn off after 30 mins. I never get to the 30 mins!

This is me exactly! But I'm ok if I sleep with my DP in same bed..but this happens only occasionally.
