You have £100 just for fun, what would you spend it on?

I can't believe I've had a bit of good luck for once.

In the shop yesterday, randomly put on a thunderball lucky dip, and won £100. It's so weird I never usually do the lotto, and when I do, it's usually the euromillions, so I reckon the universe wanted me to win.

It's been a really shit few years, I'm on my second bout of cancer, I now have a disability and can't work... it's been awful.

My first thought was to do something sensible with the money, but I'm kind of thinking "fuck it" and want to treat myself to something lovely, I can't remember the last time I bought something nice just for myself that wasn't food, it's probably been at least 3 years.

I have no idea what to treat myself to though. I love making art, reading, listening to music, I can't really go anywhere as I'm pretty much housebound at the minute. Any ideas?

Hi, OP. I am so sorry for your illnessFlowers

A lovely pair of pyjamas
Books
Nice bedding
Bath foam
Warm slippers
Something art related - what do you do? If it's painting maybe some nice watercolors, brushes?

Pahpahpotato · 19/04/2023 09:33

Sorry to hear of your troubles, glad you’ve had a small bit of luck!
I’d personally go for a ‘posher’ perfume than my everyday, some nice new jammies and a scented candle or a gorgeous bunch of flowers.
maybe something to do with your art, as above? Or a nice throw blanket for the sofa?

overitunderit · 19/04/2023 09:34

Congratulations on your win!

You sound like an interesting person with lots of hobbies so I think spending it on anything on your list would be perfect. How about perusing a few blogs to find some interesting books or ringing your local book shop for a personal recommendation then placing an order through them (beats the Amazon experience!).

You could spend it on music like a second hand record player with some records.

You could order some arts and crafts supplies.

Other than that slippers and pyjamas would also be high on my list.

A hamper of delicious food and wine might be another good alternative

DinosaurOfFire · 19/04/2023 09:36

I would buy a set of Windsor and Newton Promarkers, probably one of their 24 sets.

New art paper, 100% cotton stuff or expensive marker paper

I'd also buy some polychromos coloured pencils that I don't have, and a cheap desk easel

That would probably take up my £100!

Ooh or Id skip most of that and buy myself some copic markers as I've always wanted to try them but can't justify the cost when the Windsor Newton ones are good and cost a lot less!

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 19/04/2023 09:38

I’m glad you have had a bit of luck.

Do you have an echo dot etc for the radio/music?
How about some lovely spring/summer loungewear, a few good books, a candle and a few of your favourite chocolates.

DRS1970 · 19/04/2023 09:42

Chocolate.

Whoopdedoosomegoodluckforonce · 19/04/2023 09:47

Oh thank you for all the ideas.

I'm due for an operation soon so bedding and PJs is a great idea.

I do have basic art supplies (I draw and paint, I used to have a small business which I can hopefully get back to eventually) I try and practise a little each day, bit ill definitely look at some of the options as more of a treat for myself.

I have a dot for music, I bought myself an handpan a few years back on my 40th and started learning that before all this happened, I can't play anymore unfortunately due to my disability.

I borrow books from the library all the time (the mobile one comes here especially) but I'd love to buy a lovely book, I read anything and everything really, but I did quite fancy reading a trilogy by Naomi Novik (supposed to be like a grown up Harry Potter) that the library doesn't have yet. I don't want to commit £30 to books I might not like though.

This little windfall is so precious I don't want to waste it.

I had a Premium Bond win that I spent on a truly gorgeous duvet cover.

Makes me smile every time I enter my bedroom or look at it while I lie in bed. Feel lovely too, due to high thread count 100% cotton.

ThrowAwayOne · 19/04/2023 10:02

I'd opt for really pretty bedding, new PJs, expensive bath soaks and some body creams. And then buy the first book in the trilogy you've mentioned so you're only wasting the money for one if you don't enjoy it. Try world of books on ebay for a cheap copy.

Lovely bath for an hour and then into the fresh bedsheets with your new pjs and creams on. Honestly there's nothing like it.

And congratulations on your win :)

Applesinmyhouse · 19/04/2023 14:56

I need a new faux leather jacket. I’ve seen a nice one on Amazon for £35 so I’d get that. My last pu jacket was being thrown out by my sister. Four years on it’s finally cracking. I also really want some black high top converse. My last pair were £2 from a car boot. I’d really like some new ones. The last fiver I’d spend on a book!

C1N1C · 19/04/2023 15:04

I'd be going to one of my favourite chocolate shops or bakeries and go nuts! 100 will get you a lot in say Cutter and Squidge! Trust me, if you haven't had them, they're amazing!

TooOldForThisNonsense · 19/04/2023 15:06

A pair of trainers (addicted )

enjoy your windfall OP x

FrenchandSaunders · 19/04/2023 15:07

Sounds like you deserve a bit of luck OP.

Do you have a decent speaker to listen to music?

Figgygal · 19/04/2023 15:08

Just had same dilemma - am sick of spending any extras on just the kids or into "the pot" so bought myself a new handbag this morning that I've had my eye on so I'd say a new bag

morekidsthanhands · 19/04/2023 15:13

What about a kindle - assuming you don't have one.
Lots of libraries offer free ebooks through different sources. It could be worth looking into what your library offers as mine doesn't allow kindle downloads (I would have bought a different reading tablet if I had known!) You can also get lots of books for free and if not free significantly less expensive than paper copies.
You can get kindles reasonably priced second hand or through amazon warehouse deals too.

EarlGreyAndCucumber · 19/04/2023 16:06

I'd spend it it on something that would make me smile and brings me joy every day. I don't think a book would do that for me, but I'd get that from nice bedding, as I snuggled up in it to read; a lovely lamp in whose light I bathed while turning the pages; a heated throw that I nestle under while listening to an audiobook; or a kindle, so that I could carry my library with me at all times.

LeanneTen · 19/04/2023 16:16

All PP have given really good suggestions! I'm just here to say make sure you spend every penny on something lovely for yourself! You deserve it!

PollyAmour · 19/04/2023 16:22

Some lovely ideas here - treat yourself to some really nice things that will bring you joy and comfort.

I would go with stylish loungewear, body lotion, new bedding, scented candles and a big hunk of chocolate.

Whatever you spend it on, good luck and best wishes for a happy and healthy future.

AnnotherReader · 19/04/2023 16:44

I would spend it on books, my Amazon wishlist is extensive, it would take me thousands of pounds to buy all the books on there and years and years to read 😀

charlie10k · 19/04/2023 16:54

Fags and Booze. Carrot cake.

Mayhemmumma · 19/04/2023 17:02

I'd buy a new book and perfume

mrsbyers · 19/04/2023 17:05

I’d go for a really luxury blankie or throw

ShortKipper · 19/04/2023 17:15

A Kobo Nia? An ebook reader which you can also hook up to your library using Libby (best to check with your library first). Then you could borrow books whenever you want.

Whoopdedoosomegoodluckforonce · 19/04/2023 18:48

Thank you all, I've had a lovely day browsing and mentally spending about 10 grand 🤣

So I've ordered a lovely duvet set with daisies on, one of those triangle pillow things, it will come in handy after my op, and a new sheet (didn't really need one but I'm so excited at the thought of getting into a totally fresh new bed) a couple of pairs of PJs, a couple of pads and some new pencils, a candle, and the first in the series of books that I want to read.

Can't wait until the parcels come rolling in and I'm in my fresh bedding and new PJs, reading my new book, a little slice of heaven right there 💕

@Whoopdedoosomegoodluckforonce your treats sound lovely. I'm on the hunt for a small pick me up, while off work & waiting for a referral, I think I may treat myself to some nicer than Primark £6 pj's. Where did you order from?
