Oh please help me decide!!

Okay I’m really struggling to decide what to do.

Option 1. Stay in job I can do with my eyes closed, it’s quite interesting but very fast paced and frustrating at times as calls constantly come in breaking your concentration. Okay team of people but lots of office politics, loud noisy office (which makes my anxiety high) little opportunity to move from your desk and I’m feeling the weight gain / joint pain.

Option 2. New job, smaller, nicer team of people / great manager (I’ve worked for this team before). More money, better hours. Job content isn’t as interesting and I’d need to quickly pick up a lot of knowledge from somewhere as it’s a gap in the organisation. More opportunity to get away from the desk and no phones.

I have some experience of job 2 but will very quickly have to learn and show results. It’s also not that interesting (compliance/ auditing).

WWYD? I’m so scared of making a mistake. (I think my age is a lot of what’s holing me back) 😞

I’d go for Option 2 - more money, better hours, better manager, less anxiety. These are all very important to me.
Okay so the work will be a bit boring, but I can live with that.

MargotDeWitt · 18/04/2023 06:16

Definitely option 2!

What is holding you back from moving to option 2?

Strongvibes · 18/04/2023 06:28

I’m a bit scared I’ll be crap at new job. I’ve done a bit of it previously but this time I’ll be wholly responsible for the smooth running of the whole thing. There are parts that no one in the organisation seems to know how to do, I’ll need to be proactive to find this out and make it happen.

That's exactly the calculated risk one has to take in order to grow professionally.

You seem very aware of what you need to do in order to be successful; I believe in you, OP!

Strongvibes · 18/04/2023 08:34

Thanks! Just need to believe in myself now and actually do it!

I'd go for option 2. They wouldn't be asking you if they didn't think you'd be able to do it long term. Also, once you've learnt/picked up what you need to do, it might be more interesting than you think. Long term I think you'll be happier with job 2.

SophiaSW1 · 18/04/2023 10:50

Option 2

ThreeRingCircus · 18/04/2023 10:58

Definitely Option 2. The interest comes from having to learn something new, even if the content is a bit dry it's still a good challenge so view it as interesting from that perspective.

Plus more money, better hours and a nicer team are all so important I place a lot of value on that. I think those positives outweigh the negative of it potentially being a bit boring. I say that as someone whose job can be quite dull but the money, flexibility and nice working environment more than make up for it. I've been in jobs that are more interesting and varied on paper but in far worse working environments and the stress just isn't worth it when you spend so much of your life at work.

Namechange224422 · 18/04/2023 11:00

Option 2.

Do some research for decent courses on the thing no one knows how to do and negotiate the company paying for that as part of your discussions.

Lovestodrinkmilk · 18/04/2023 12:01

Option 2.

If noone knows how to do it, you can make the job your own, tailor it to your own strengths. I second get them topay for training.

vitahelp · 18/04/2023 12:03

Absolutely Option 2 if it was me! As @Lovestodrinkmilk says, if no one has done it before there will be no specific expectation or process so you can make it your own. That is a rare opportunity that you should go for.

sorryiasked · 18/04/2023 12:12

Well you don't seem very happy in option 1 so if go for option 2 and enjoy the challenge.

I’m back….a curveball has been thrown by my manager in order to keep me in the team by offering me a supervisor role to stay and manage my team.
My manager is lovely and I can quite happily work for him, the job is interesting and I’d have lots of support from colleagues at manager level. The team I’d manage, there are a few difficult members and it won’t go down well with all of I was to be their supervisor.
Bit more opportunity to leave the desk / phones but still in that chaotic office environment and all moans (and there’s always loads) will be now directed at me.
Plus there’s one or two in the team who relish seeing me crash and burn.

Somehow it feels like a shit sandwich wrapped up in a pretty bow. My gut instinct is to run far away but can’t help feeling it might be an easier option in some ways as less to learn.

Has anyone got any thought on this please? I feel like I’m losing my mind trying to decide. Option 2 is still the way I’m leaning to but my lovely manager has been so kind as he’s desperate not to lose me.

OP posts:
Strongvibes · 25/04/2023 17:59

And staying now as supervisor would mean more money and better hours.

Doggymummar · 25/04/2023 18:00

I have never seen this scenario go well. Stepping up to lead a team you were once in is a thankless task.

frozendaisy · 25/04/2023 18:04

It's a job.
I would go for more money, if it's make a real difference money, because then your next job will pay more and then the next one more, good starting negotiation, this is how men think, it's partly why they earn more.

Learn more earn more. Win win. Never stop learning.

But it's your life OP

Strongvibes · 25/04/2023 18:06

The other job is more money too, they’ll be pretty much on par. It’s the decision between moving to something new or staying put. The team I work in drive me mad some days, why would I want to manage them?
