Quick question for mums about whether you'd go to a and e or not for this-

quirkyquerty · 17/04/2023 23:08

My son has recently turned three, he had an op recently for an undescended testicle and he had a little incision on each side of his tummy and one in his tummy button. It healed well, the op was five weeks ago now, and he hasn't been in any sort of pain for at least three weeks.

Last night he was complaining that his tummy was sore, and this evening the same thing. He has been charging about as usual all day at the childminders, and was happy and playing with his brother this evening. When he went to bed he let me feel his tummy, and there's a noticeable hard lump that has developed just above his tummy button.

After some googling I'm concerned it might be a hernia? I've got a six period day as a teacher tomorrow and setting cover now is going to take me absolutely ages. I have called 111 and I'm waiting for a call back, which will be within the next six hours.

I can't decide what to do- take him to a and e straight away in the morning and take the day off work and set cover now? Or go to work and take him to a and e after work?

I'm not putting work before him, he just seems happy and unless being poked and prodded he doesn't seem in too much discomfort.

DH can't take the day off to take him as we'd lose a days pay that's worth far more than mine, and also the logistics wouldn't work out with picking out other son up from school etc.

What would you do? Thanks

I’d take the day off and see if the GP would see him or at least do an e consult so you could express your concerns. I don’t think it’s an A and E job personally x

quirkyquerty · 17/04/2023 23:12

V difficult to get even a call back from our Gp, otherwise that would be my first option!

Without seeing or feeling anything and I'm not a medical professional but yes it does sound like a hernia and no I wouldn't go
To a and e unless he starts running a fever, is sick, listless or otherwise unwell.

Agree it's not an A&e thing, imo anyway.

quirkyquerty · 17/04/2023 23:12

That's interesting- even though he's only three? Do you mean to go to a and e after work?

OP posts:
JeanieJo · 17/04/2023 23:12

I would go after work based on those options. It doesn't sound like an absolute emergency.

quirkyquerty · 17/04/2023 23:13

Argh okay so what's my best move here?

OP posts:
MeinKraft · 17/04/2023 23:14

What's your childcare set up?

quirkyquerty · 17/04/2023 23:15

Childminder tomorrow- I'd drop off at 7.45 and pick up at 4.15 ish at the earliest

OP posts:
Invisimamma · 17/04/2023 23:15

It's not an accident or an emergency.so not a&e. I'd just make a GP appointment.

thaegumathteth · 17/04/2023 23:16

I'd see what 111 say. If they say see a GP if he's otherwise well then I don't think it needs to be tomorrow but just soon. Do you have a number for the surgeon who did the Op?

Wishiwasatailor · 17/04/2023 23:17

Call for GP telephone appt. tomorrow. Wouldn’t go to a&e unless unwell

quirkyquerty · 17/04/2023 23:17

No, no number for the surgeon

OP posts:
MadameThenardier · 17/04/2023 23:18

Wait and see what 111 say. If he’s well in himself it’s really not appropriate to go to A&E. It’s neither an accident or an emergency and you are clearly not overly concerned so it can wait for the GP.

thaegumathteth · 17/04/2023 23:20

It's definitely not an a&e issue.

Fwiw ds had a similar op and if this had happened I think I'd have called GP and if no luck I'd have tried the ward he was on.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/04/2023 23:21

Just wait and see what 111 say, they will arrange an appt if your GP can't see you.

Blanketpolicy · 17/04/2023 23:22

Obviously can't see him but from your description it doesn't sound like an emergency so i would try for a GP appointment.

blondieminx · 17/04/2023 23:25

If he wasn’t complaining of pain I’d be more relaxed.

he’s 5 weeks post surgery and has pain and a lump? So should be reviewed.

I’d set the cover, and take the day to get him sorted. Hopefully 111 will get you an appt. Hope they call back soon and wishing your son a speedy recovery.

Argh okay so what's my best move here?

But people are giving their opinions already so what do you mean, what's my best move?
I thought your question was going to be 'shall I take him now or wait to hear back from 111', not whether I should take him 8 hours from now or 16 hours from now.
Surely, if you're so concerned to be considering A&E, you take him now. Or if you're not that concerned, you wait to hear from 111 and take the advice from a medical professional. In all the options you have, my first one wouldn't be to ask a load of random strangers on MN and then when they give their opinions, still say, 'what's my best move'. People are literally telling you what they think your best move is but you're still asking. What reply do you want?

I'm not sure I'd be happy with that OP and I get the feeling you aren't totally either. If he was staying with a grandparent then maybe. He'll probably need to go and see the GP at some stage tomorrow so you'll have to leave work anyway. I would arrange cover which will let you keep an eye and stay with him and get him sorted.

alyceflowers · 17/04/2023 23:27

It doesn't sound like an a&e issue but I would make a GP appointment.

Nismet · 17/04/2023 23:31

I think 111 will give you a way forward.

Think I would want him with me to keep an eye on him and be able to give a full history, but it depends on your CM.

quirkyquerty · 17/04/2023 23:46

@Dontbelieveaword

I was asking whether other mums would try to get a doc appointment in the day, or after work, or hospital after work.

No need to be so narky dear.

OP posts:
quirkyquerty · 17/04/2023 23:47

Tired and stressed here. Thanks for advice all

OP posts:
Dontbelieveaword · 17/04/2023 23:50

Not narky dear, just confused as to why people come on here asking people if they should take their DC to A&E. If you have to think whether it might not be worth taking time off work for, it's not an emergency, is it? And you are waiting for a call from a medical professional, who will tell you the right answer. Goodnight dear, lovely chatting
