So today, everyone’s tired, obviously first day back at school after an exceptionally busy Easter holidays. Anyway I said to dd 5yo, of course you can have a snack and let her trot off, She grabs some crackers and zones out on her tablet. Next thing DH and I hear is a loud choking noise. I’m on the toilet, DH in his office both upstairs. DH dosnt have the best hearing especially when zoned out. It took a second or 2 for me to register something was wrong, I call out to DH, he runs runs downstairs to find our very new 9yo has heilmliched our 5yo who was choking.

Im just over the shock and yes DH and I definitely will take away from this we need to be more careful, but can’t help being super proud of our 9yo DD for her fast thinking

Well done DD 9 years old she is a super hero. Her instincts took over and her cool head allowed her to save her sister. A medic in the making there.

What an awesome and calm DD you have there. Tell her well done, she's an amazing superstar from us too Star

Have you taken the 5 yo to hospital? Essential after someone has performed the Heimlich.

Impressed that she knew how to do it! Did you teach her?

Kanaloa · 18/04/2023 00:50

How amazing, what a superhero! It will also be great for when they have rows as teens 😂 of course I can borrow your new makeup and clothing, I did save your life, you know!

nocoolnamesleft · 18/04/2023 00:57

Your 9 year old is utterly amazing. But the previous poster is right: after a Heimlich it's advised to get medically checked out, just in case of damage to the spleen.

Wonderful but choking is silent, so the intervention was unnecessary, your younger DD would have coughed up the cracker. Get younger DD checked out and teach big DD this, but still wonderful what she did

Well done her for showing such initiative! That's the big sister you want.

I'm a bit out the loop as to at what age kids are taught basic first aid in primary schools now?

dizzydizzydizzy · 18/04/2023 06:27

None in my experience !
My dc (age 11 and 14) have only learnt first aid at home and at Scouts.

This isnt strictly true. The coughing can cause the blockage to get sucked in and wedged firmly in the windpipe and more difficult to free.

When it happened to me I realised and managed to close my airway with my tongue, breathe deeply through my nose while suppressing the cough reflex and coughed it out "from behind" iyswim. It's a total fluke I thought of that in my panic. But as coughing makes air flow in both directions with some force it can make the blockage either better or worse, no one can know!

Rubyupbeat · 18/04/2023 14:56

Wow, well done, what a super hero x

AliceMcK · 18/04/2023 17:17

Thank you everyone x

Her school did run a first aid after school club a couple of years ago, but she saw it on a movie we watched. I’m wracking my brains to remember the movie. She said we talked about what to do if someone was choking, but I can’t remember having the conversation, I absolutely believe her though.

I had no idea I needed to get my other dd checked, I’ve since called my GPs and they aren’t concerned as she’s been running around playing all day.
