If you have a really high glasses prescription where do you get your glasses from?

I am -10.25 in one eye and -9.5 in the other and my glasses have just broken 😞

Last time my prescription changed the glasses were £300+ and that was pre-covid so dreading to think what it'll be now. That was from vision express who I get my (reasonably priced) contacts from.

Any suggestions where will be cheaper for glasses?

Thanks

If you pay monthly for your contacts by direct debit at vision express, you will get 50% off of a pair of glasses every year.

Foster son has 7.5 and 8.5 and we get his at Boots because he needs the thinner glass and they send them away to someone to get the lighter in weight lenses for him. Last pair cost over £180 and he got the NHS voucher as a child. That was almost a year ago we're back again in July.

-950 here and I use specsavers
Because of the strength I also get a voucher which is a help for expensive lenses! I always get the maximum thinned
They've been very good with me

Do those who get glasses from Asda use them for the eye test as well or just give them your prescription. I just moved to a new independent optician which came highly recommended but I may have let out a little swear when I saw the cost of frames on display. So I’m only using them for contacts. Can I trust Asda opticians for an eye test?

butfirstchocolate · 17/04/2023 23:24

Asda here instead. Also used them for my eye test and it was fine.

Without getting my glasses thinned I would look like I am wearing coke bottle bottom glasses that always end up sliding down my face because they're so heavy. Their choice of frames isn't as wide as somewhere like Specsavers and you have to wait months for an eye test at my local store but its well worth it

That’s good to know thank you.

i didn't have a good exp with specsavers.
i told them that i just wanted the cheapest frames, but they kept trying to upsell branded ones.
i realise they are franchises, so i guess it's the luck of the draw.
i went to boots once, but i paid a lot for glasses i could never use.
they made me feel as if all the edges of rooms, floors, tables, were coming up towards me. made me feel giddy, as if i was on a ship at sea.
i told them this and they adjusted them but in the end i gave up. they were all v young.
they didn't seem to understand the problem.
they said they'd made them acc to the eye test.
but there must be other elements, as well as strength of magnification.
i've worn glasses since age 10.

Smartbuyglasses if I want designer. Glasses come from a high end Hong Kong based optician - I verified it during a recent visit. Else I just use Specsavers and a decent cashback scheme.

Thank you everyone, it looks like spec savers will be worth a try. I will check out the 50% vision express discount voucher though as I don't recall that from last time although I get my lenses on Direct debit.

Yes I get the "really high prescription " government voucher/ I got excited last time when the optician mentioned it...to find out it was £14 Grin
