I work in an office quite a good job but hear of so many people working from home and i would love to do this my work would never let me work from home. I also only do basic admin really not bad pay but would love to do something more but would still like to work from home. So was curious to know if any of you work from home and if so what do you do?

B2B editor in tech magazines. I've been wfh full time since 2016, excluding conference travel to Asia and Europe. Would never go back to office based unless I literally couldn't find another job. Been at my current role for 8 months after being given a settlement from my previous employer while on maternity, and I've been to the new office twice including our Xmas do :)

tellittotherubberduck · 18/04/2023 18:29

I'm a software engineer working for a small tech consultancy. We are hybrid but completely flexible so can choose how often to go in. I usually do one or two days in the office and the rest at home, but I could be pretty much 100% wfh if I wanted.

HuggingtheHRT · 18/04/2023 21:02

Yes, a learning and development manager for professional body.

I work from home 4 days a week and go into the office 1 day a week. We have a common team office day so we save all our team catch ups for the office day so we can collaborate in person.

At home I usually spend about 4 or 5 hours a week in meetings or delivering learning. The rest of my week is spent creating training materials and managing in-house accreditation programmes.

Home working has been invaluable in helping me juggle being a mother and work. I wouldn't be able to manage school drop off or collecting my son from after-school childcare if I had to fit in a commute to the office every day.

Finance Manager. I absolutely love wfh, the work life balance is 10x better.

I'm home for deliveries and workmen. I can get groceries delivered, saves another hour or two outside of work. I can stay on top of the laundry and cleaning in my breaks which frees up the weekends. I can work in the garden when it's sunny and I'm able to do the school run and get back to my desk in 15 min. I can eat a freshly made salad for lunch that doesn't cost the earth or was made 4hours earlier.

Workwise the quiet allows me to get absorbed into the spreadsheets. Thanks to emails and WhatsApp I'm in touch with my colleagues within seconds rather than hoping they're at their desk. I don't think I could go back to the office.

Same here. I’m a director in big pharma, WFH for years, before COVID I was going to the office one a week, now once a month to see people. I don’t think i would be able to come back to 5 days a week at the office.

BaconAndAvocado · 18/04/2023 21:26

I’m a home tutor, helping children prepare for the Kent test.
I used to be a part-time primary school teacher out of love with the system.

I have reduced my hours as a midwife now and work from home running my own travel business

Caravaggiouch · 16/03/2024 17:52

Full time WFH is shit. I work for a local authority and do 2 or 3 days a week in the office and 2 or 3 at home depending on what I’ve got on that week.

Yes. I am relatively senior in a publishing company, it’s very busy and I rarely get breaks, but I adore not having a commute.

Buttheywereonlysatellites51 · 02/10/2024 12:01

I work from home as a web/graphic designer and go into the office one day a week.

Yes.

Work for a tech Company, negotiate contracts.

WFH it is super handy, I lie on the couch for most of the day, listen to a lot of podcasts whilst working.

Mooch around with my dog, bring him for walks. No commuting. Can put on washes and get groceries during lunch hour. Can get a lot of life admin done during work hours.

The negatives are:
It's isolating.

You spend so much time in your own home, you don't have as many organic interactions with randommers, you don't meet people for lunch.

You need to motivate yourself to do something at lunch time, it's very easy to just continue mooching around at home and not get out.

You don't really need to dress up all that much.

Other than the above, it's brilliant!!

another contract negotiator here - and this is pretty much my experience!

RupaulsHagface · 02/10/2024 12:28

Product Manager, WFH all the time. Have done for about 8 years now. Don't miss the office at all.

I work in QC Compliance for a global pharmaceutical company. WFH 2-3 days per week.

Startingagainandagain · 02/10/2024 13:56

I am a part-time Senior Marketing Manager working from home most the time and also self-employed running a side-hustle from home.

My company did try to get me to come in once a week but I live 2.5 hour away from their office each way, have a long term disability and was told when I was recruited that I would work remotely apart from attending quarterly staff meetings, so I refused.

I only agree to come in once a month for events/staff meetings. I am looking for a fully remote part time role because I really did not like how they tried to force me into the office though when they knew full well it would make no financial sense to commute and that my disability makes it difficult.

Before that I have had fully remote roles as a Project Manager and also as a Fundraising Manager.

So it is possible to find these roles and the advice is to always have the home working written in your contract.

I am also looking at being self employed only to be able to WFH all the time.

Lulubo1 · 02/10/2024 14:04

Finance Manager for a small tech company. I basically run the entire finance side of the business from my home (I'm the only finance person in the business). From processing invoices to preparing the management accounts, I do it all. I used to go into the office 3/5 days a week (I used to work full time), but since having my DD I work from home 100% and only work 3 days a week. However, I moved house 120miles away during mat leave. I still go into the office once every 8 weeks and they pay for my travel, meals and hotel when I do.

JessiesHuman · 02/10/2024 14:41

I work from home and only go into the office one day a month. I work in employee communications.

I've had long Covid since 2020 and wouldn't actually have the energy to go into the office every day. By working at home I can pace myself and spread my working hours throughout the day, taking breaks when I need to.

blueoverwhite · 02/10/2024 14:47

Public sector. No one ever has to go in, so they don't, but I hate it. Its badly affected my ability to build a role for myself, build relationships. Its awful. Its a terrible way to work in the public sector which is all about joined up working and partnership working.

Don't you have Teams?
Public sector was "work wherever you want" long before Covid.

XelaM · 02/10/2024 19:42

Solicitor at large City firm. Technically it's hybrid working, but many people only come in once a week if that. Everything done over emails and Teams.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 02/10/2024 19:49

@Jesswebster01

I'm a Proof Reader. Yes I work from home. Requires quite a lot of concentration, but is well paid. I LOVE working from home, and hell will freeze over before I go back into an office again.

JoeyandBeansMum · 02/10/2024 22:59

I’m a midwife and have reduced my hours by running a very successful travel business as a second job from home (ever just won Virgin Voyage’s at home travel agency of the year!) . The goal is to earn enough to work bank shifts when I want and choose when I work from home, so the best of both worlds!
