Paris day trip - off the beaten track tips

Hello

I have decided to spend the day in Paris tomorrow via Eurostar. Probably not relevant but I will be remembering/marking my DD’s birthday, who passed away 14 years ago. Feeling quite floored by it this year and so need a nice day.

I have been to Paris many times and absolutely adore the city. Looking for unusual places to visit. I’m hoping for a gentle day and the weather looks fab. I’d be grateful for any tips.

Musée Rodin is a great suggestion, if you've not been before. The Musée Guimet is lovely as well, with a Japanese garden where you can have a traditional tea ceremony - very serene, might be fitting for the occasion [flowers[

Walk round Montmartre to find la Maison rose?

Given the context, definitely NOT Pere Lechaise Cemetery or the Catacombs...

I'd spend a lot of time just walking around and trying not to grin like an idiot at the prettiness of Paris.

Marais area is good for a wander:

  • Place des Vosges (there's a 'secret' route to/from Rue St-Antoine in the south-west corner: through the courtyard garden of l'Hotel de Sully (not a hotel - the building is now the department of National Monuments)).
  • Rue des Francs Bourgeois for window shopping.
  • Carnavalet Museum (history of Paris) - reopened not long ago after a renovation. I think it's still free entry.
  • Musee Congnacq-Jay (free entry unless an exhibition is on) - the art and antiques collection of a wealthy couple from the early 20th century. It's housed in a very old building (might have been their home) - good opportunity to see inside a grand building even if you're not particularly interested in art.

Apologies OP, I reread your OP and my suggestion was deeply insensitive. My only defence is I skim read.
I apologise if I caused offence

No offence taken at all. I find cemeteries to be really peaceful places. I appreciate your suggestions.

I'm glad I didn't offend.
I found it a beautiful place, the monuments that line the cobbled streets are so incredibly beautiful. I actually have a framed black and white photo I took of them on my bedroom wall.
Very serene to be in the middle of a big city and in such a peaceful place.

We got back yesterday and you should be aware that there was still a lot of riot police and even army presence after the protests. The Marais walk is a good suggestion, as would be Montmartre or the 6th but steer clear of Bastille / rue de rivoli/ the hotel de ville which border the Marais. (The other places I’d add to that list might be lunch au terrasse in place st Catherine or obv place des Vosges, and the village St Paul between St Paul metro and the river, and the passage d’ancre)
have a lovely day

If you like stained glass, Sainte Chapelle, near Notre Dame

WestEndGirls · 17/04/2023 16:48

I was also going to suggest Sainte Chapelle - stunning and so often missed in favour of Notre Dame which is just over the road!

Vermin · 17/04/2023 17:10

The sainte chappelle has been absolutely heaving for the past 4 years since the fire at notre dame, and with the school holidays - it will be a very long queue there tomorrow. I’ve never seen Paris so busy

I actually enjoy visiting cemeteries whenever I travel. I love seeing how different cultures honour the dead. I will go there tomorrow.

The catacombes are amazing, definitely worth a visit.

Thank you Vermin. Do you suggest giving Promenade Plantee a miss as I was planning to start that at the Bastille entrance?

OP posts:
Vermin · 17/04/2023 17:18

No, that will be delightful! Just be prepared for the potential of a lot of sirens and some seriously tooled up police at the metro (& lots of graffiti!). They were a really obvious presence all week, and all day / night (even though we saw no actual protesting by heading to the left bank)

Vermin · 17/04/2023 17:20

(Rue de rivoli / various stations / hotel de ville were completely blocked off by police several times, and I presume to was the same at Bastille which I only saw one evening)

DraconianDen · 17/04/2023 17:25

Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is a beautiful little hidden gem with a waterfall, I lived in Paris for a while and it was my go to place for a little wander!

thinkfast · 17/04/2023 17:36

The Picasso museum is lovely and not usually as crowded as some of the others, if you're into art

MargotBamborough · 17/04/2023 17:43

Look down on Paris from a great height from the Tour Montparnasse.

Musee d'Orsay is fabulous and not as overwhelming as the Louvre.

Magnoliainbloom · 17/04/2023 17:53

Such fabulous suggestions. Thank you all so much - I will look these up.
