Are Easter Baskets a thing now?

I follow a few US mums vloggers on YouTube (yes, brain rotting rubbish I know!) and they all seem to make Easter Baskets for their children.

These are basically baskets filled with what I would consider stocking type stuff, crafts, small toys, books etc. this is on top of eggs.

So out of interest do you make an Easter basket for your children or is this a Internet mum thing?

Ive only seen Americans do it

Pixiedust1234 · 16/04/2023 22:24

No. My children got a chocolate egg each and that's it. No hunts, no baskets, no bunnies. Its all consumer tat that will end up in landfill anyway.

PriamFarrl · 16/04/2023 22:24

It’s an American internet mum thing to stick on your Instagram.

I've done this for over 20 years, I make a basket with eggs, crafts, a book etc (basically an Easter version of a stocking).

Not a new thing, not an American thing, and not even a social media thing as I'm not on it.

Easter Baskets have been around since medieval times. Traditionally gifts of food. Obviously over the many many years they have evolved.

BertieBotts · 16/04/2023 22:34

Apparently the large easter eggs we have are only a thing here and in Australia.

The tradition in America has always been a basket with some small gifts/sweets, it's instead of the big chocolate egg though, not as well as it.

They don't even have smaller chocolate eggs! When they do easter egg hunts, they hide plastic eggs which are filled with any type of small sweet or even savoury snacks like pretzels or goldfish crackers. (This solved a mystery for me as to why some people were polite but mystified when I ran the yearly English-speakers' easter egg hunt, which in our non-English-speaking country is attended by Americans and Brits and others - because I, being English, only included chocolate and small gifts.)

Obviously social media means that people get weirdly competitive about how impressive they can make the basket!

Yep. Have done them for my kids every year. We celebrate Easter in our family like a mini Christmas. Got them a small toy storage box each with art stuff, teddies, small toys and easter treats.
Egg hunt in the garden in the afternoon. Have done it for years. Not on Instagram or any social media. Easter is an important spring celebration in our house. The kids love it.

StressedToDeathhhh · 16/04/2023 22:44

Exactly the same as @Bearonthestair and my mum did pretty much the same when I was little

NotPrettyInPink23 · 16/04/2023 22:52

Yes have done for 16 years. A few little eggs, crafts, book etc
