broken phone, insurance etc

If anyone has any experience of this, can you tell me what you think?

DS age 13 has broken his phone today, totally squashed, unrepairable. It's a contract phone and I'm half way through a 3 year device payment plan with O2.

I'm pretty sure it's covered on house contents insurance although I'm not sure what the excess will be. I'll call them tomorrow.

He's currently using his brother's old phone which is functional but is older and loses charge quickly. He's put his SIM card in so he's got the same number, air time package etc as he had before.

Is there any point in me calling O2, or have I just got to accept paying the rest of the device plan, even though I no longer have the device?
And will my insurance premium go up next year if I claim?

I'm wondering about just carrying on with his brother's old phone, if the claim will bump up next year's premium.

All wise words welcome!

My house insurance excess is £500 and they do tend to recoup claim costs through higher premiums in the long term.

Sorry posted too soon. DS 12 did the same thing and I sourced a replacement on cex. I don't know what your DS had but I got an iphone SE 32GB for less than £100.

I think you have to finish paying for the device. If you bought a car on finance and crashed it you'd have to pay for it regardless which is why you have insurance.

Of course you will still have to pay the device plan, it is unfortunate but it isn't 02's fault that the phone is now damaged beyond repair.

I wasn't sure if they would still provide the contract if the device was no longer functioning. But I guess they wouldn't know either way.
