The NHS is bloody wonderful

Yesterday my DM sounded either very drunk or having just had a jab at the dentist, just when it was worrying it got better. I Face Timed her just after 6 in the evening and it was bad and I thought the side of her mouth was drooping so I rushed up to see her and decided to ring 111, they answered within 5 minutes, assessed her and sent an ambulance, she had scans and was ready to come home by midnight. Unfortunately it’s a lesion on her brain but her treatment has already started with steroids, anti fitting drugs, further scans and referrals to two different oncology departments, all of this within 24 hours. Her speech is already almost back to normal.
All the staff have been marvellous, treated an 86 year old with respect, kindness and honesty which didn’t inspire fear but hope despite having lost her DDIL last year five weeks after a brain tumour diagnosis.
I fully expected to spend hours just getting in contact with the different services, getting to A & E and for my DM to spend hours in corridors especially as our only hospital is regularly in the local press for their terrible waiting times and I know that this is the experience of many but I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who works for the NHS and their dedication in the face of a government determined to run it into the ground so they can sell it off to the private sector.

I am glad that the NHS is working for your mum. I wish her well.

WelshNerd · 15/04/2023 23:12

Best wishes to your mum. My experience of the NHS recently has been amazing (DS needed emergency surgery after an A&E visit.)

That's great news, we've had a run of illness and injury and our local hospital has a new Urgent Care unit, two of us have been seen within an hour each.
And today I ran out of migraine meds while not at home and kind DH chased round pharmacies while I got on NHS online and he got me tablets after they sent my repeat prescription record to the local pharmacy.
Sadly the delay meant it lasted all day and I should get my renewal in earlier. My fault on that one.

I'm very glad the NHS worked for your mum. Excellent for you but it bloody well didn't for my (late) DH.

Nurses are due to strike again and it's A&E ones too this time, I'm not surprised they're striking because the NHS has been driven into shit.

More tragedies due for everyone else, you can tell I'm not a fan of pro tory era propaganda thank you.

I’m in your camp OP - the NHS is amazing.
They all deserve the pay rise.

ToHellBackAndBeyond · 15/04/2023 23:28

That's lovely, I'm so glad your mum was seen quickly and received great care 💐
We had need to use the 111 service this week which resulted in a&e, blood tests, cat scan, the lot all done and dusted in a few hours. Cannot fault their care and kindness at all. We're lucky to have the NHS, in particular the feet on the ground people who work within the service.

This 100%

the care I received when having my last baby was nothing short of amazing. I was in absolute awe of all of the staff from the cleaners to the doctors.

I am so sorry about your DH but I hope this doesn’t come across as Tory propaganda- read my last sentence- I fucking hate the incompetent one trick pony money grabbing xenophobes who are currently in office but want to celebrate the people who staff the NHS.

I'm glad your DM got sorted out.
As a family we have had several experiences recently and, although there have been some patchy bits which should never have happened, our experience overall has been good
There are undoubtedly issues with the NH caused by underfunding (because, as a nation, we do not pay enough tax/NI for the service we expect) and an ageing population but I do think that many people are being sucked into a mindset of thinking it is worse than it is by the media

Youdoyoubabe · 15/04/2023 23:35

This is lovely to read so far in life only needed NHS infrequently for routine stuff so this is good to hear.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/04/2023 08:50

Ditto to that, OP. I was recently in for nearly 3 weeks with a very nasty infection. Couldn’t possibly fault any of the very prompt and kind care I received - starting with the ambulance crew who blue-lighted me straight into to the emergency room.

For someone who’s rarely needed to see a GP and had considered myself more or less bomb-proof, I don’t mind admitting that the illness came as a very nasty shock.

Winemygoodenemy · 16/04/2023 09:14

Agree. In an emergency they were great with my mum. She had pneumonia. Rushed into ED and started treatment within 30 mins of calling an ambulance. No one left her side.

she took a turn and immediately admitted to icu. Unfortunately she didn’t make it as her body couldn’t fight it. But at least I can rest knowing she received amazing care and prioritised.
