3rd party claiming I have been in an accident 160 miles from where I live

I’m not sure if anyone has any advice for me. I got a phone call from my car insurance company saying a 3rd party has claimed I was in an accident in March. The place where the accident is alleged to have happened is 160 miles from where I live. On the day in question I was working and used the car for work. I can prove where I was but I guess can’t prove where the car was 🤷‍♀️.

It’s very bizarre. My insurance company have asked if I’m willing to go to court, which I am as I know it wasn’t my car, but I feel a bit worried.

I’m hoping it will just be dropped as they won’t have any proof. How can they have as it wasn’t my car. Could it be just a number plate mix up? Or should I be worried my car has been cloned and I should I inform the police?

Oddly enough, the same thing has just happened to me. Email from my insurance company stating they’ve received a claim that my car hit another vehicle.
Problem is, the alleged accident happened 250 miles away from my home and when it supposedly occurred I was having lunch with my family in a local pub. No more information but I’ve been asked for evidence of my whereabouts.

It’s very weird but I think most likely a wrong reg number. I had a letter from my insurance company saying that a car had hit my car whilst changing lane. My insurance company said they would just drop the claim in 6 months if they don’t get any evidence.

Insurance worker here. If this were me I would be asking my insurance to send an independent assessor to inspect my car & asking that they contact the third party insurer requesting confirmation of the description their customer provided of your car (for example, they could have given your reg but said they were hit by a completely different make, model and colour to yours).
I would be asking them to remove the claim from the policy once they've confirmed no damage.

Right now it shows as an open claim which can effect your no claims discount and cost of renewal. Plus the longer you wait, the harder it is to prove no damage as realistically you could have had it repaired.

This happened to my husband a few months ago. Contacted insurers and told them he was hundreds of miles away and they sorted it out.
