What do you bring to work for lunch

I hate having to bring lunch as I never know what to bring with me ( as daft as it sounds) I used to work next door to a co op so regularly nipped and grabbed stuff that I wanted BUT it was working out very expensive and I was mostly eating junk so my plan is to bring healthy alternatives in but what do I bring? Im useless at thinking and planning food but I want/ need to lose weight

I take a chicken and salad sandwich made with one of those warbutons thins and a yogurt and in my bag I have a Tupperware container of pecans and chocolate chips which I keep topped up as necessary.

Or I buy poached salmon and I have that with chopped cucumber and some brown bread.

And I take a flask of tea.

savoycabbage · 15/04/2023 14:10

I hate the thinking and the planning too so I just have the same things over and over again for lunches.

Oblomov23 · 15/04/2023 14:12

I always take lunch. Never have not. Left overs from last night, lasagne, pasta. Make a salad. I freeze jacket potatoes with butter, cheese, pepper.

It's so depressing isn't it?! I always see people eating lovely things but I never seem to have that moment of inspiration that I need at 7:30am lol

If there’s a microwave available, batch cook healthy stews or soups and portion into containers. Or just buy a range of cans of soup and take one in from home each day.

Belledan1 · 15/04/2023 14:36

Don't go in the office as much now but when I do I take different things. Sometimes left overs, with veg, a chicken salad, a sandwich or someone's just a cup of soup or a tin with a roll. Look forward to some more ideas.

Belledan1 · 15/04/2023 14:38
  • sometimes I mean. Sorry hit send too soon. Will take fruit too and perhaps some crab sticks.
Oblomov23 · 15/04/2023 14:40

The answer is to sort it the night before. Seriously it's major, don't leave it till the morning. Take something out of the freezer the night before. You get up in the morning, it's already done. Major difference.

UndercoverCop · 15/04/2023 14:44

Much the same as above, sandwiches, salads, soup, couscous salads are good in summer with left over rust chicken, veg etc. If your office has a toaster , pitta bread, humous and some veg sticks is always nicer with toasted pitta.
I also keep a couple of pots of kabuto chilli noodles in my locker, less than 250 calories and surprisingly nice. Not like grim pot noodles.

LittleFreakJezebel · 15/04/2023 14:47

We have microwaves so I just take whatever I have had the night before, if we've had something like fish fingers and chips then I just take some pittas and hummus.

AlbertaWildRose · 15/04/2023 14:48

I take a lunch every day and make it the night before. I don't have the energy or brain power to do it in the morning. I usually take leftovers, or some raw vegetables and hummus and cheese, yogurt, and fruit.

Protein - chicken, ham, lentils out of a merchant gourmet packet, tuna, egg and tuna, Bean salad out of a tin
+
Grains - half a microwave packet
+
salad or roast Mediterranean veg (do a batch - they freeze ok too)

In a Tupperware box
+
Dressing in a little sistema pot

Babybells and apples for snacks
Some protein bares (Barebells or grenades) for v hungry moments

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/04/2023 14:52

You have to have a rough plan for the week, and sort it the night before. You can sort it in the morning.

TheChosenTwo · 15/04/2023 14:53

On those rare occasions I’m motivated to, I’ll make myself up a big grain salad over the weekends and take that. Otherwise, I work in London and I’m spoilt for choice where to go to eat so usually just get myself something I fancy.

Mrsbclinton · 15/04/2023 14:56

You need to prepare everything the night before, also I would buy a few extra containers.

Depending on what shift Im on I would bring
ceral, yogs, berries, yog, sandwiches, wraps, cheese & crackers, soup, leftovers eg pasta bakes, shep pie etc.

If you have access to a fridge & microwave then you can bring in anything really. You will also save some money if you aren’t shopping every day.

lampshadesally · 15/04/2023 14:56

Some great suggestions here. Think I'll spend tomorrow batch cooking for the week. I'm thinking nice savoury rice and chicken, soups and little pick n mix type bits n bobs. !! Keep the ideas rolling though

Dp went to work with 2 small Lidl sausage rolls, a bag of quavers, an Easter brownie and an apple. I had the same at home but a satsuma instead of an apple. We’re trying to save money though so it’s nothing amazing/luxury 🤷‍♀️

Leeds2 · 15/04/2023 15:36

Not healthy, but I would take a Pot Noodle occasionally!

Slice of quiche, and some salad. Or just cherry tomatoes if that is easier.

Soup and a roll, homemade soup to make it healthier.

FinallyHere · 15/04/2023 15:38

My favourite lunches start with a wide necked kilner style jar, which is filled (from the bottom up...

Start with a puddle of delicious dressing, then add some bill with say beans, protein chicken breast or bacon bits. Layer up with interesting veg and finish with salad leaf and fresh herbs / micro sprouts.

Keep it in a 'fridge. Just before eating give it a good shake to distribute the dressing and turn it out into a bowl or plate.

Infinitely variable. Enjoy.

MotherWol · 15/04/2023 15:44

We have a fridge and a microwave in the office, so at the start of the week I buy a multipack of yogurts, a pack of rolls, some fruit and granola bars to keep there.

On Sunday I make a big batch of soup (usually tomato and lentil) and divide it into four tubs, then I take one in each day. If I’m too busy to batch cook, I buy two tubs of fresh soup and have those instead!

Best Lentil Soup

This healthy lentil soup recipe comes together quickly with pantry ingredients. Simple spices, fresh greens and a squeeze of lemon make it the best! Vegan.

I like the bol and soulful pots if you have a microwave.
Also sometimes cook a bit extra dinner and take the leftovers.
If the leftovers are a bit measly or want to reduce lunch cals or spread it out over 2 days, I chop or grate extra veg in

summersanchez · 15/04/2023 15:50

I've embraced intermittent fasting and have one meal a day maximum during the week. As a result I've lost 4 pounds in 2 weeks and I don't have to take lunch to work. Win Win

gettingolderandgrumpier · 15/04/2023 15:52

Why do you find it hard ? Just make extra of chilli / lasagna etc and have that for lunch . I make chicken pasta salad/ soup / leftovers. Once in a blue moon I’ll make a sandwich but I often think they’re a bit boring . I think spending my Sunday batch cooking is a bit depressing too . Making extra so you have leftovers takes no time .
chicken pasta salad , I cook pasta in the morning throw it in Tupperware with chicken & salad & done .
soup just take a tin warm it up in a bowl with a roll .
all of these take minutes and are cheap it’s just organising yourself.

I make a big bowl of something like a chickpea/cous cous/ rice salad. It keeps in the fridge for a few days. The night before work, I put some in a Tupperware to take with me. Or if there's something at home like leftover chicken, I would make a sandwich. I also pack fruit and maybe a cereal bar. The office has coffee, tea and milk for free. I keep a bag of fruit and nut mix in my desk. Would not touch the microwave in my office kitchen but a thermos for eg soup is also handy.
I used to have issues with work lunches too but once you plan and factor it into the grocery shopping it becomes routine.
