DD is interested in OT, any therapists like to share what it's really like?

Strangely enough I've been thinking about retraining in this recently so following with interest and giving your post a bump

I'm an OT,work in a school for kids with autism. Love it but would struggle to work in NHS Due to red tape but a lot of OTs do.

Me, retrained in my 40’s and currently work in a community mental health team. I think it is an excellent career choice. Plenty of opportunities in lots of different settings and (for me at least) no shifts. I would highly recommend it!

DS2 is in his final few months before graduation, last placement done and the dissertation on the go. He has a rotational post lined up to begin as soon as he's handed in.
He loves the job and has enjoyed every placement but he did find some of the interprofessional modules on his course frustrating. I think that's probably because he hasn't had that much NHS exposure to see why it's valuable, but he thinks it wasted time where he could be learning more about OT.
As someone who had a long NHS career and now teaches post-reg healthcare students I think it's probably one of the better AHP routes to choose as it doesn't have to lead to working in the NHS.
Hope your DD finds out plenty and if she does choose that path, enjoys it.
