Reading in house

I love reading. Prefer it to watching tv but if someone is watching tv in our house I have to go upstairs to read. Do any of you have areas to read in? We have a conservatory but it has our musical instruments and DH's computer and music equipment so no space in there. I just feel it today as DD is not well and has camped out watching Netflix in the sitting room so if I want to read I'll have to lie on my bed or sit on the window bench in my bedroom. DD has her own tv but DH said to give that a rest today and I don't want to kick her out of her own living room

I've encouraged her to read for a bit as well

Is there space in the study/music room for an armchair? That's what I've done. It is angled one way when not in use but, as soon as I go to sit in it, I turn it so I'm looking out of the window and can pretend DH's stuff and the instruments aren't there. It also means that the shelves are within reach and there's space on there for my cup of tea

If you love reading, then it really doesn't matter what others are doing, tbh. I have a book right next to me, right by the computer while I'm typing. I carry my book around the house.
To the person like me, reading a book is as natural as breathing, you don't need the environment to suit reading. It can be done anywhere, and everywhere. I'd read while I'm cooking or boiling water to make a cup of tea. It's natural.

It depends on your concentration not whether you love books or not surely?

@frozendaisy there are some cushions on it. I just feel like I'm banished to my room then lol

Can you not think of it as a multi use room not just a bedroom. Honestly a window seat you can just stare out of when you reach a part of a book you want to think about or just take a break you have a ready made sky for contemplation. Have you got a budget (or birthday) coming up for a just you reading chair up there? Move the room slightly and then when you are up there reading it sort of says "my time only interrupt if very important".

Basically you do have a space. Just make it more as you want.

I really like this idea @frozendaisy Thank you 😊

I bought a big TV for the playroom so I could read in peace in the sitting room. We also have a hanging chair in the dining room that is good for reading in. And at some point I shall decorate our bedroom and put a comfy chair in there as well. Basically plan for lots of good places to read. Which is daft really because I'll quite happily read on the loo!

@teaandtoastwithmarmite if you want to read but be physically in the company of others why not treat yourself to your own noise cancelling headphones? DD has some from amazon I think they're called SoundAnker, they weren't particularly expensive and you can have the noise cancelling on with music playing or without and you can use them as a headset for work as they have a mic too.
