Would you go to a&e for this or not?

So yesterday I pulled my back badly. No injury or accident though, back just went. So I really doubt I’ve fractured anything. However the pain is indescribable. I’ve broken my back before and this is honestly 10x worse. I can’t sit, I can’t stand, I can lie down flat but can’t move.

It took dh ten mins to get me to the bathroom for a wee and I was screaming the whole time. I’ve never known pain like it. I’ve taken morphine and it hasn’t touched the pain. I can’t pull my trousers up or down.

but the hospital won’t be able to help will they? Could it be a disc?

Though dh has pointed out he doesn’t think he’ll be able to get me in and out the car. 🤷‍♀️🙈

Yes of course! Especially as you’ve taken morphine and it’s not helped. Poor you, sounds horrid

Aerosarethebest · 15/04/2023 06:56

yes, the hospital will be able to help. They have better painkillers. They have muscle relaxants.
Big question is, how are you going to get there? If you can’t sit in a car then it’s potentially an ambulance job. Not a very urgent one, so you’d be waiting a long time unfortunately.

111 for advice might be a good idea as a first step OP.

EVHead · 15/04/2023 06:58

Yes I would go to A&E, as painkillers haven’t helped.

I once had to phone an out of hours GP in the middle of the night when DH turned over in bed and hurt his back - GP gave him a painkilling injection in the bum and that sorted it. If you don’t have that service available to you go to A&E.

Hospitalornot · 15/04/2023 06:59

Ok, will give it a go. Maybe I can fall lengthways into the back seat or something, will try. Thanks.

Yes ring 111. There might be somewhere else to go than A&e like ooh gp so your not hanging around

Fudgewomble · 15/04/2023 07:00

111

LynetteScavo · 15/04/2023 07:01

You wouldn't necessarily be waiting a long time for an ambulance (maybe people I know have got very lucky recently) but you do need one.

ClarissaExplainsSome · 15/04/2023 07:05

It sounds like a slipped disc. The worst pain ever - however a&e won't be able to help as much as an osteopath. I would try and get a same day appointment, you might need to be carried in but after half hour you will be able to hobble out.

Good luck, it's horrible!

God, I can’t imagine being able to cope with anyone touching me

You will be directed to the GP out of hours but if not available, the A &E. You will get a standard cocktail of Naproxin, Lansoprazole and possibly some Diazepam to help you calm and relax.

It is terrible pain and what you will need is exercises. You have to keep moving. The best exercises are Pilates type things so squats, hypers etc. if you don't get an exercise regime your back will still be painful and weak in 9 months. Exercise going forward will help ward off repeat attacks as you will probably have ruptured a disc.

If you get any pains going down your leg, tingling or numbness you need to see a doctor quickly

Feelingcrazy123 · 15/04/2023 07:15

Do you have any pain/tingling or numbness in your legs?

ClarissaExplainsSome · 15/04/2023 07:18

@Hospitalornot I get that but they will be gentle to start with and honestly it will be the best thing you do. I really don't think a&e Will be able to do anything.

I'm prone to this, it happens a few times a year and the difference 3 osteo sessions makes is astounding.

In the meantime ice it and try to gently keep moving so it doesn't seize up.

Hospitalornot · 15/04/2023 07:19

I do Pilates with a really good Pilates instructor twice a week normally. The muscle relaxant painkillers sound good.

How do you have morphine just lying around?

is there a minor injuries or similar near you?

Hospitalornot · 15/04/2023 07:23

Ok, so I did 111 online. Told me to go to my GP……which is obviously closed. It says if my gp is unavailable to go to a&e.

I had an accident a few years ago and had some morphine then. We don’t have an OOH service.

I honestly think your time would be better spent seeing an expert in backs than waiting for hours in a&e..

Natsku · 15/04/2023 07:27

If you're in agony and morphine isn't helping then absolutely go to A&E.

Sirzy · 15/04/2023 07:28

If the pain is that severe then it needs checking properly. Well meant advice from MN may risk making things worse

Was the morphine you've taken still in date? - almost all medication deteriorates and becomes less effective after a 'few years'

Newuser82 · 15/04/2023 07:46

Definitely go to a and e. Sounds really awful! They will at least be able to give you some more painkillers.

CiaoBellisima · 15/04/2023 07:49

Go to a and e. Do NOT let an osteopath anywhere near you until you have been checked out at hospital.
