Reflux, allergies.. concerned about plan?

My 12 week old has suspected allergies to cows milk protein and eggs, he is exclusively breastfed. Due to a fairly bad reaction yesterday GP has advised me to stop eating dairy and egg's immediately and to start him on omeprazole. I'm a bit worried doing everything at the same time, how will I know what helped? Typically I can't phone the GP back to ask as I've thought about it too late and they're closed until Monday. I am now umming and ahhing about whether to give the omeprazole. Can anyone help?!

I would probably be feeling the same as you. You could maybe leave it a week and see if he improves without the medication?

My DC improved almost immediately, within 24hrs I'd say, after I cut out eggs. My understanding of dairy is that while technically it can take weeks to leave the system you'll likely start seeing an improvement much sooner than that. My DC only has egg & nut allergies so I don't have direct experience with dairy.

When did their symptoms begin? You should go dairy and egg free in your diet for at least 6 weeks before you see any improvement on little one. What type of bad reaction?

HiKelsey · 14/04/2023 18:38

Also if you give omeprozole you've got 2 weeks of the acid battle so sickness and reflux symptoms will be worse and little one might be uncomfortable for those 2 weeks

Also as a heads up, dairy allergies often overlap with soy allergies. Something to do with them being molecularly similar. So if you're cutting out dairy also do soy otherwise you might not see an improvement and incorrectly assume that he's not allergic to dairy.

Coffeeandcrocs · 14/04/2023 18:43

Cut the allergens, leave the omeprazole. If no improvement after 6 weeks then consider medicating but I'd be wary with using PIP inhibitors personally. Cutting my sons allergens resolved all of the issues for us 🙂

Agree re soy. No need to cut it now but don't add more in than you already have eg don't switch to soya milk/yogurt etc unless you use it already. Oatly barista is best milk.

llaethqs · 14/04/2023 18:43

Almost everything I bought today for me to eat in the vegan section is soy. Oh ffs! Do I cut it out now or in a few days if he isn't improving? Blush

I would avoid soy if possible. Coconut is a good alternative, or oat based. If you post what you like to eat I can make some suggestions - own brand bourbons are often dairy free as a start! 🙂

HiKelsey · 14/04/2023 18:49

My daughter is milk, soya, egg and wheat free. So cut the milk and eggs out now because you know for definite they are causing issues. If in 6 weeks or any new reactions there's still a problem remove soya too. Join the group I'm on called main group cmpa on Facebook, you can post anonymously and there's so much support. They have a breastfeeding group too.

But I'd cut dairy and eggs first, don't give omeprazole yet personally as you're going to cause 2 weeks of torture to you both which may not be needed when you cut those things out your diet.

HiKelsey · 14/04/2023 18:51

A lot of places has things that are free from without you noticing so don't spend loads. Tesco bourbons are free from milk, soya and eggs. Those ogg cakes are milk and egg free. That group I suggested has loads of good foods that are accidental finds x

I've been suspicious for a while that he is mildly allergic to dairy, he had reflux symptoms, mild eczema and was quite unsettled and I noticed a correlation between what I'd eaten and how bad he was. It was relatively mild though so I thought perhaps he's just slightly intolerant. I very rarely eat eggs but I had two night before last and yesterday all day his skin was red and angry and rashy, he had repeated explosive diarrhoea throughout the day and did nothing but cry.

Sounds like allergy to both. All his symptoms sound like non-ige reaction (they're what used to be called intolerances) whereas ige reactions are immediate like anaphylaxis, thought this would help you if you wanted to do more research. Youll want to ask for a dietician referal now for weaning and may as well ask to get a referral for the allergy team started by your gp as theres a bit of a wait. Some babies don't react to breast milk but mine did immediately in the hospital, so you may notice more allergies when weaning.

MisschiefMaker · 14/04/2023 19:09

I think they could easily be ige allergies given he is reacting to her breast milk not actually consuming the allergens directly.

llaethqs · 14/04/2023 19:16

They suggested it's non IGE as the reaction to the eggs was the next day but I didn't think that made sense as it can't be instant to me eating it as it isn't instantly in my breast milk and he hasn't instantly fed. When he is feeding his feeds flares up and he has diarrhoea during the feed so I thought it was IGE

I'm feeling so overwhelmed by it all!

It's things like meat replacements, pesto, vegan ice cream etc I bought that have soya on the ingredients. I bought oat milk and I didn't buy yoghurts or anything like that. I've found this online - so these are ok to eat? Or I need to not eat them? Confused

Really recommend 'breastfeeding with cmpa and other food allergies' Facebook group - they were my lifeline with my first allergy baby.

ScoobyBooby · 14/04/2023 19:45

Cut out both diary and eggs . Start the medication . I’ve read about the yoghurt challenge . Once he seems settled and well enough eat a yogurt and if some of his symptoms come back you will known it’s CMPA.

Sacla have just changed their vegan pesto to be soy free, be careful though as the change over is still happening and most online supermarkets are still using the old ingredient list.

Ige is normally anywhere between immediately after up to 4 hours I was told. And anything after that is classes as a delayed reaction which is non ige

Honestly the Facebook groups are amazing support as it's really overwhelming
