The word “moist”

SuspiciousDuck · 14/04/2023 17:52

Why all the hatred? Every single time I see a thread about words people dislike, this word comes up. Why?

Surely it’s a lovely old Anglo-Saxonish, slightly onomatopoeic word for something soft and damp and oozy. Like a mossy lawn after spring rains, or a delicious cake (lemon drizzle, of course, this being Mumsnet). Is that so terrible?

If pushed, I might come up with a theory about ingrained misogyny and suspicion of the female body, given how often it is listed alongside the words “gusset” and “panties”, but maybe I’m overthinking…!

Any other defenders of the moist out there?

I completely agree, op, it's an inoffensive word and your descriptive second paragraph is spot on.

ExtremelyDetermined · 14/04/2023 18:09

Yes, its just a normal word.

Damnloginpopup · 14/04/2023 18:12

It's so much more sexually charged than 'soggy' though...

MaccyD100 · 14/04/2023 18:13

I always think this. I'm sure it's just some weird identity bandwagon that people have jumped on and convinced themselves they actually feel.

DriedFlowersLiveForever · 14/04/2023 19:03

It's just a word. I always think people that dislike it are like teenagers trying to fit in with the latest craze 🙄

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 14/04/2023 19:06

I was wondering this after hearing that Costa advert on the radio. I don't specially link it to sex, but then I don't read erotic novels or anything where it might come up!

JoanJettsMullet · 14/04/2023 19:08

I love it because it makes me think of chocolate fudge cake.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 14/04/2023 19:08

I like it too.

SuspiciousDuck · 15/04/2023 11:14

Glad I’m not alone!

I'm a 'moist' hater. Unless it's related to cake 🤣

it's not a 'bandwagon' I don't have a teen attitude & I've nothing against moist sexual bits... (in fact hitting menopause I'd like mine back please!)

for ME it conjures up wet dish sponges, bath mats, that kind of thing. Bleurgh.

IDK wouldn't dank, fetid or slimy be better to describe that kind of unpleasant cold dampness

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 15/04/2023 11:49

I don't understand why it's so disliked, either. Probably a bandwagon that people jump on when threads appear about disliked words, because they can't think of their own.

Sugarfish · 15/04/2023 11:51

I don’t get the hatred, it’s really boring when someone starts those words you hate threads and it always comes up in the first few replies. Maybe people genuinely hate the word or it’s a band wagon thing. I actually like it, makes me think of cake. I also find the sound of it pleasing.

Quinque · 15/04/2023 11:53

I always think off moist in connection with soil, perfect for planting and weeding. No hatred here!

@onirgellep

maybe/maybe not, but it not me describing things. It's other people using 'moist' & it's a word I hate. It has nothing to do with womens parts or being on any kind of bandwagon!!

LawksaMercyMissus · 15/04/2023 23:07

One Foot in the Grave.....odd neighbour used to say "is it me or is it moist?" I've found it a bit icky since then!

NameChange647 · 15/04/2023 23:15

I was actually thinking about this the other day. I don't like the word but then I thought to myself my dislike of the word probably came about when it became a big thing on social media. If it wasn't a trend to hate the word then it probably wouldn't even bother me. Panties though, I've hated that word since I was a teenager.

Worldgonecrazy · 15/04/2023 23:16

Pterry spoiled it for me.

Mindovermatter247 · 15/04/2023 23:23

My db’s gf absolutley hates it, he always winds her up… the other day on my birthday he asked me if my cake was gushing with moistness as she was eating… thought she was gonna kill him 😂

foulksmills · 15/04/2023 23:27

'Moist' isn't great but it's not too bad. I don't like 'meal'.

SmugglersHaunt · 15/04/2023 23:32

There was a girl at school who violently hated the word ‘moist’ and also the word ‘tissue’ (especially if the Ss were pronounced strongly), so inevitably everyone chased her constantly, shouting “moist tissue, moist tissue”

Omg this made me laugh! 😂😂😂

WishingMyLifeAway · 16/04/2023 02:57

I like the word too! Can't understand the hatred!

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 16/04/2023 03:09

I agree. I mentioned as much on a 'what word do you hate' thread recently.

Like you, someone mentioned it was probably due to some sort of sex squeamishness, or squeamishness of female arousal, which makes sense. As you say, lots of things (aside from vaginas) are enhanced by being moist. Cakes and lawns are good examples. I like a nice moist lipstick.

Much better than things being powdery and crumbly.

This. It's just a word. I don't get upset at any words tbh, the sheer amount of threads on here about annoying words are more annoying than any words, lol
