Recommend me olives for a beginner...

Just that really. I'm on a keto diet at the moment and running out of ideas. Olives seem to be the thing but I've only ever tried them once on holiday in Greece about 30 years ago and they weren't for me.

However, I reckon maybe my tastes have changed enough to have another go but don't want to put myself off by trying the wrong thing or buying too much and throwing away.

I eat most things (but not tea or coffee or kidneys or celery or coriander or strong flavoured fish).

we have a lidl too, it's a larger store than the aldi but I think it's the same amount of stuff just more spread out and it has a bakery - which is obviously no use to me... 😂

Nocellara olives are divine!

Theyre green ones that are mild and buttery and delicious!

Agreed and M&S fresh ones are the best I’ve tried.

RuLu · 13/04/2023 20:59

Chilli & garlic! Aldi & Lidl do them. So do Sainsbury’s but they're expensive there!

This!!

Aldi do Nocellara Olives and they are delicious.

betsyannegrey · 13/04/2023 21:02

M&S do a large tub of olives with herbs and lemon, so delicious. I have discovered that they go beautifully with walnuts, totally yum.

happysunr1se · 13/04/2023 21:03

Agree with pps, Perello Gordal picante olives, big, juicy and satisfyingly savoury without bitterness, they are the olives you can get at the restaurant chains Bill's and the Ivy.

Thanks all, I'm liking the sound of mild and buttery as a place to start. We don't really have a deli type place locally but I can access most supermarkets including a Waitrose so should be able to find a choice. It's not something I've ever looked at/for before.

Some great tips too! Can't do the pizza and wine unfortunately. No alcohol, no bread, no pasta, no rice, no potatoes etc etc. I can do oil, cheese, nuts and garlic etc though.

I've just had fathead low carb pizza with olives on...

Perello Gordal Piccante olives come in a tin. They are the best olives ever!

I agree! They are almost meaty. I’m a vegetarian though so take that with a large grain of salt.

Have them with cheese but better still have them with roasted vegetables like courgettes and aubergine and peppers and red onions and artichoke. And different types of salami and hams. Nice with fresh salad leaves and tomatoes and avocados. That's pretty low carb innit?

helpfulperson · 13/04/2023 21:40

lidl and tesco both have olive selections for a very reasonable price. I would suggest buying a couple and trying. I find it depends very much what I'm in the mood for.

These! Positively buttery

You'll get nocellara olives in m&s and Waitrose and Sainsbury's. Love them!

If you like anchovies you can get "Fragata" tins of green ones stuffed with them. I LOVE these. But they will upset you if you don't like fish!

MotherofTerriers · 13/04/2023 22:21

Another vote for Perello

Cj19877 · 13/04/2023 22:28

This sounds weird, so bear with me, but try eating 6-7 in one sitting. A friend recommended it after I mentioned disliking them and I'm hooked now! It's worked for others too. These were just Aldi olives in the chilled section.

Yep, that's all low carb though I'm only 2 and half weeks in and already could see veg and salad and avocados far enough. Strangely haven't been craving my normal go to of chocolate and ice-cream but i'd totally kill for an apple or a banana. Virtually all recipes suggest cauliflower or cabbage as a side so i've sickened myself with those. Have discovered that I can make a wee portion of garlicky roast radishes which are now my potato replacement and I made "bread" from mozarella cheese and almond flour that was pretty good.

Just ordered dome perellos because of this thread! 🫒🫒🫒🫒

HouseByTheSeaside · 13/04/2023 22:38

Mmmm olives with nuts and manchego cheese 🧀🫒🌰

flippyfloppy · 13/04/2023 22:42

Perellos all the way here too!!

Lightningrain · 13/04/2023 22:42

I used to hate olives until I had some in Italy. They were huge green ones with the pits still in but I like them all now.

They don’t all taste the same so if you don’t like one variety you might like another. If you like garlic and chilli those are usually nice as it’s not just the olive flavour that you taste.

tobee · 14/04/2023 04:37

Roast radishes sound intriguing! Have you a recipe @BigBoysDontCry ?

BigBoysDontCry · 14/04/2023 07:51

I just stumbled across it but I see Google has about a million different ones.

Mine was just tossing prepared and halved radishes in butter with garlic and sea salt and then spread out in a layer on a baking tray and cook at about 180 for about 25 mins or until soft and going brown on the edges.

Enjoy!

Mm love radishes!

HouseByTheSeaside · 14/04/2023 16:43

I love a raw radish dipped in sour cream or mayo & a bit of salt

strawberryseed · 14/04/2023 16:53

I have another tip, my ex said they were an acquired taste and recommended I eat one everyday when we were on holiday. I did and suddenly started to love them. I've been enjoying them for decades now.
