Wwyd - statue crayon incident

Just been reading the news report on a 200 year old statue being defaced by blue crayon.

If your child was responsible and hadn’t been spotted would you own up?

I would class myself as quite responsible, but not sure I would?!

Many years ago our local church was defiled inside. There was a degree of sophistication to the damage. Prayer books had been neatly torn up and stacked like jenga, chattels had been strewn around the grounds and faeces had been used like felt tips to draw pagan symbols on the walls.

The village and police were going down the lines of teenagers, but more likely an adult or two with a grudge against the village.

It turned out to have been two 8 year old boys, bored in the school holidays.

Journalist's name - Oprah Flash! Great name, worth clicking on the link.

Doesn’t look like a young child to me, a teenager perhaps

Are you an art critic?

CrapBucket · 14/04/2023 07:08

They’ve drawn a good neckline on her and shoulder straps, it’s not a tiny kid that’s done this.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/04/2023 07:11

I think it’s an adult. Someone who doesn’t like the NT views on allowing children to roam.

gogohmm · 14/04/2023 07:14

If it was outside, why would a child have crayons. If it's inside you watch them like a hawk due to the priceless artefacts. We did a lot of NT and similar places, you have to watch your children ... but I actually think it's likely to be an older child who knew it was wrong and it was deliberate

Alighttouchonthetiller · 14/04/2023 07:15

Teenager. If you click on the article and zoom into the statue you can make out the ubiquitous 'willy' drawing, with the breasts representing the balls, that some teenagers feel compelled to draw on every available surface.

OllytheCollie · 14/04/2023 07:16

In perhaps the ultimate stealth boast all of mine would have been capable of that level of damage aged 4 if left unsupervised near a statue with a crayon. Giving the lady eyes and clothes is the kind of thing that would appeal to them. The youngest earnt the nickname Banksy for some of his work at home.

But we did supervise them and I don't think any major vandalism occurred on our watch. I hope I would have fessed up if so.

DuckBushCityLimit · 14/04/2023 07:20

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if some halfwit stood there and watched their precious offspring do that, chuckling indulgently at their marvellous creativity. Some parents are dicks.

Croomegraffitartist · 14/04/2023 07:21

To answer the question about crayons outdoors. They NT at Croome are giving out crayons with every Easter egg hunt ticket purchased. It’s meant for bark rubbings. Also, this statue is right on the edge of a lake, so dangerous to leave young children unsupervised.

DuckBushCityLimit · 14/04/2023 07:25

And I expect there were crayons on hand because of an Easter or children's history trail with a colouring sheet to fill in as you go round.

hotdiggetydog · 14/04/2023 07:29

Pretty funny tho innit. No actual harm done.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/04/2023 07:37

I assumed vote as probably done by an adult and was deliberate vandalism.

Madcats · 14/04/2023 07:41

I agree that it is more likely to be a bored primary school kid. That damage must have taken a fair amount of time to do.

Looking at photos of the grotto, it looks as if the path might get quite muddy. Perhaps that explains why nobody spotted what the kid was up to (we certainly had plenty of rain where I live over Easter!).

JPduck · 14/04/2023 07:50

I'd be mortified.......as crayon is wax, they can probably use heat to help remove?!?

PriamFarrl · 14/04/2023 07:55

If it was 4 year old, how did they reach the face?

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 14/04/2023 07:56

As much as I would be incredibly embarrassed and guilty for not supervising my child better, it's crayon on stone, it won't be hard to clean off and even if no one took hot water to it, it will wear off after a little while so at least it's fixable.

I don't see vandalism as funny.

Oh yes, really funny, vandalising artwork.
no damage done? Except for the place that will have to pay to fix this?? Why should they?
why not the ineffective parents who allowed this?
who knows if it will be restored completely?
do you teach your children to not have respect for other people’s property?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/04/2023 08:07

I would guess that even Banksy's early work wasn't great.

Are you always a prick? Or is it just an internet persona?

User478 · 14/04/2023 08:41

I think it was 2 kids who were "playing nicely together" while mum and dad had their picnic and looked at their phones.

I'd say younger child (3-4) scribbled on the capability brown memorial and older (6-7) one drew clothes on the lady. Both realised they probably shouldn't have when they took a step back and decided not to mention it to mum and dad.

Mum and dad very proud of how nicely the children behaved that day and how much they enjoyed the bark rubbing.

Nearlyspring23 · 14/04/2023 09:23

General consensus seems to be older child, perhaps without parents knowing.
I hope they feel remorse now!

It’s something I wouldn’t put past my 9 year old. Who would then have instant regret once the moment was over. However this morning I showed them the article and they were pretty horrified someone would do that, so maybe i should give them more credit.

Crayon wipes off and it's been acknowledged that the "artwork" needed a clean anyway.

Let kids be kids for god's sake
