Nearly naked children on social media

I saw today that Gorka Marquez has posted some pics of his lovely daughter on holiday, in which she’s just wearing bikini bottoms. I’ve also seen similar pics with little boys and girls where they’re naked from behind so you can see their bare bottom.

It really doesn’t sit very well with me to put nearly naked children on social media. Partly because they have no say in it, partly because you have no idea what sickos are out there and what they’ll do with the pics.

Lots of comments on his post saying “you’re the parents, you know best” but I think it’s much better to not even have them up.

what do you think - innocent family pics or one to be saved for the private holiday albums at home?

I have no objection to young children being naked or partly naked in public and actually think it's more dangerous to society as a whole if we insist they cover up.

I have lots of photos of my children when they were naked or scantily clad but I don't think I would share them via SM. Not because of the paedophile aspect of your argument but as you say because the children have no say in it and those photos are "out there" forever.

LadyJ2023 · 13/04/2023 13:08

Hmmmm naked no way in public sad but true you have no idea who can be perving on kids or taking pictures of them. Shouldn't be like that but it is in this sick world. Swimming gear then thats fine I think

Unfortunately, people are all too unaware of how sex offenders use misappropriated legal images and content.

I work in the CSAE arena including the area of indecent images of children and believe me, that's exactly the kind of image many of these men (it's mostly men) like to use for their own purposes. They can also be more easily manipulated on photoshop etc to become more explicit.

Pictures like that are lovely family photos and should be kept privately.

This isn't about the average person sexualising children, this definitely is about the protection of children in general. Add in their own right to privacy, and it is questionable why on earth anyone needs to see nude or partially nude images of any child unless it's a private family memory.

bluedomino · 13/04/2023 13:42

I've never posted any photos of my children on social media and now they are older they are so grateful to me that there are no embarrassing photos of them out there. They love looking through old photos but they are private and not for public consumption. What we may consider an innocent image a pervert will get off on.

ImAGoodPerson · 13/04/2023 14:00

I'm so confused, what should a young child wear for beach/swimming? Surely bikini bottoms is sufficient for any child under 8?

I wouldn't put naked photos of a child on SM but in swim attire it probably wouldn't cross my mind not to.

A rash vest and shorts mainly due to sun protection.

And men are vile. More of them than you think. There will be plenty that will go home and masturbate over nearly naked children. I would never put my daughter in a position that was more vulnerable to that due to being undressed.

Surely using photoshop if someone really wanted to manipulate a photo they would do so regardless of the content. I see loads of holiday snaps on FB/IG etc, kids in their swimwear on the beach. I have done lots of basic Safeguarding sessions through work and not once has this been raised actually so I am really interested to learn that this is something of huge concern. I would have assumed naked photos were of course.

Obv a rash is best due to the sun but it is the same for boys or girls that are that young, bottoms is sufficient for either modesty wise, rash vest for sun protection.

Gorka Márquez is Spanish. It’s totally normal in Spain.

Good point, I holiday in Spain regularly and literally no child wears a top under about 8 years old. It is completely unnecessary and IMO is much worse putting a bikini top on a girl that young.

It is the photo on SM that I think is what people are divided on.

I’m not suggesting children shouldn’t wear swimming costumes in public, just that photos like that don’t need to be in the public domain

I agree that little girls don’t need to wear bikini tops

I completely agree and had the same thoughts when I saw the pictures online. I feel its inappropriate to post pictures of your children online fully clothed let alone almost naked! It's a privacy and safeguarding thing!!!

AllOfThemWitches · 13/04/2023 14:25

Just keep your kids off social media altogether 🙄

QuentininQuarantino · 13/04/2023 14:30

But she isn’t naked she’s in age appropriate swimwear?

theres an argument for not posting any photos of a kid’s face at all online, because it is terrifying what AI can generate already with just a photo of a child’s face (I’ve seen artists make their children into fairy princesses, warrior queens and na’avi people, so obviously in the wrong hands it will be possible to generate abusive images.

…but a bikini which she’ll be wearing in a very public place, such as a Spanish beach, probably going to the chiringuito for lunch etc, is no different than another outfit.

Lcb123 · 13/04/2023 14:37

I don’t care what kids wear on the beach buts it’s not appropriate to put pictures of them online when they’re too young to consent. That’s in general. Not just when nearly naked

eatdrinkandbemerry · 13/04/2023 14:38

No need for it at all !
Can't anyone keep photos for their own memories private anymore.

This.

Most of Europe tbh. When my kids were small they didn't like rash guards, once they were out of the pool / sea they don't fry quickly enough. Much easier to wear a bikini bottom and slather them in F50

As I'm sure you're aware paedophiles aren't exclusively aroused by images of naked children

Mothercare catalogues without nudity used to have a high exchange value amongst imprisoned child sex offenders

IDK maybe keep all pictures of your children off the internet or have extremely tight privacy controls
