If you were privately educated in the UK, what job do you do and how much do you get paid?

You often hear that people who were privately educated had a better start in life and that's why they are more likely to secure better-paid jobs.

I was not privately educated but I am well paid. So I'm curious to see what jobs people who were privately educated in the UK have as adults, an how much they earn from those jobs.

Personally I don't think private adds much

What matters:
Decent IQ / CATs (110+)
Any SEN managed well
Highly engaged, supportive professional parents
Highly educated parents
Family income top 30-40% ish eg not hard up
Stable home life and key parenting figures
Good peer group
Safe local area
Stable housing eg same bedroom for teen years
Economically up area eg can see opps within 2hr of where you live that pay enough for a home, car and holidays

Many families can do this and have reasonable enough schools nearby.

We're staving tuition fees & allowance (1k a month for the kids currently) and have some buy to let accomm can release house deposits from

Private education is a rip off in my view.

I earn £160k, bank director & DH earns £185k in IT. Both went to state schools. Get 20-30% bonus each too. Work very hard.

I disagree that parents have to be highly educated in order for a child to do well.

Yep you summed it up here! Totally agree with this!

@Meandfour you could argue either way but i would rather have a better educated parent than one who calls their kids “mate” for example!

That’s really sad you’d judge your own parent on their level of education.
An extreme example- My mother was in a coma for over a week after being in a horrific car accident at 15 so got zero qualifications and had to start from scratch learning how to count and write her name. She is far from highly educated and she’s not the most intelligent either and still struggles with her memory at times but my god she is an amazing mum and woman and granny. She had mainly minimum wage jobs for years. She was the best mother anybody could’ve wished for.

My in laws aren’t well educated at all and shock horror, FIL calls his own children and his grandsons “mate”. Didn’t stop his son (my DH) being hugely successful and FIL is an amazing dad and grandad. DH is early 30s with a business worth over 7 figs and children in private school. His “mate” of a father who brought him up on a council estate hasn’t been of any detriment whatsoever.

I am a nurse, so would earn £35573 (Band 6 with nearly 20 years experience) if I worked full time. I always wanted to be a nurse, so, if my parents feel they wasted their money, they knew what to expect as I only went to private school for secondary. My siblings went to state school and earn significantly more than me now.

Hoppinggreen · 13/04/2023 18:35

I think something else to consider is how much a bad State school can take from a child as well as what a good Private one can give them.
I honestly feel my DC would be different and not in a good way of we had been forced to send them to the failing State school that was our only alternative to Private

Just laughing remembering my GP next door neighbour shouting “hi mate” to my 5yo yesterday as he was riding his bike.
I think he’s probably considered highly educated.

Lonecatwithkitten · 13/04/2023 18:38

Privately educated two degrees and a postgraduate certificate from RG unis - 88K
Husband state educated left without a single qualification. OU degree obtained in his 30s, senior motor racing engineer 180K

Joesghostkyconscience · 13/04/2023 18:38

Yes but there’s a difference with issuing it once or twice or using it to address your child most of the time!!!

Joesghostkyconscience · 13/04/2023 18:38

^using not issuing

redskylight · 13/04/2023 18:38

Blaueblumen · 13/04/2023 17:53

Of course it’s unfair to have so much pressure on them.

Yes, it would be unfair!

But my point was that you do not know that parents are actually putting pressure on their children, you're simply assuming it!

Parents may be willing to make sacrifices simply so their children are happy!

Pressure to be happy is as much a pressure as any other.

Joesghostkyconscience · 13/04/2023 18:39

@Lonecatwithkitten because he is a clever man and isn’t lazy!

This is down to individual schools and not private/state though.

How so? My FIL does. I outlined my DHs career success. How does a parent calling you mate affect your future prospects in anyway? It’s a ridiculous statement.

Should add his Dad was a lorry driver, even later in life with the right motivation it is possible to achieve.

That's my children doomed then.

ChocChipHandbag · 13/04/2023 18:41

But surely that's a valid point @redskylight - no parent is making the state vs private decision in a vacuum. It's always about specific schools.

He must’ve not called his son “mate” your husband would’ve never gotten to where he is if his lorry driver dad called him mate!

MintJulia · 13/04/2023 18:46

OP, that's easy. My ds is a bright little soul, especially with maths. By year 5 in state primary, he was bored, miserable and angry.

One of the local independents offers a maths scholarship so I asked if he'd like to have a go. He won it, and while it's still a stretch for me, he is happy and joyous and carefree again, and that is what matters. 🙂

Joesghostkyconscience · 13/04/2023 15:25

@3WildOnes
waste of money. If you choose the right state you will have the same outcome!

Unfortunately I couldnt afford to buy a house close enough to the excellent state 2 miles down the road. Which Unfortunately meant my child didn't get in. Our closest schools are pretty dire.
Surprised you didn't realise that you can't just pick and get whichever school you please!

tona79 · 13/04/2023 19:01

Went to one of the best public schools, loved it, but didn't fancy a "career" as thats all a bit too much like hard work.
Went to art college and got an HND, went back to work for same college as first a junior lecturer, then a lecturer - slipped through the loophole that let serving college lecturers cross into school teaching without a degree whilst being conferred QTS - Head of dept in a large comp. very happy to be a fully paid up member of the awkward squad and a massive under-achiever on £40K, who cares, life is too short for commuting or working in the back bedroom.

TheAudie · 13/04/2023 19:03

DH was private educated: earns about 25k. I wasn’t (from one of the most deprived places in Scotland): earn £70k

TheAudie · 13/04/2023 19:05

have just seen the tail end of this: what the hell is wrong with a dad calling his son (or daughter) mate? How on earth can that impact salary etc

gettingolderbutcooler · 13/04/2023 19:06

Senior nurse. About £50k

mids2019 · 13/04/2023 19:14

I think one of the points of this thread is did the private education give you certain qualifiactions/attributes that allowed you the 6 figure salary?

Does private education give you a relatively wealthy peer group which acts as a spur to get a high salary? Is the high salary in some way associated with your own expectations having been to a private school?

the old school tie has meant to have died a long time ago but in reality has it?
