Any tips for really dry scalp/dandruff?

I've always had bad enough dandruff, but the last twice I was at the hairdressers, both hairdressers commented on it. One suggested leaving coconut oil on overnight, which I've done since January, with no noticeable improvement yet. This week, another suggested a medicated anti dandruff shampoo or a mask. I don't like wearing black tops now because of it. Any suggestions welcome.

My hair itself is also very dry and frizzy.

I feel your pain, I have tried everything over the years. Nothing works 😕

I've heard 'Moo Goo' do a sensitive scalp shampoo and it's meant to be very good.

Try supplementing daily with flaxseed oil or fish oil. Give it a month on the maximum dose and you should see an improvement.

Hi I came in to recommend Moo Goo. I used to have a dry itchy scalp. Psoriasis runs in both sides of my family. I’ve used Moo Goo for years now. Only one that has ever worked. They do a scalp balm too for flare ups but I’ve not needed it.

Have you tried switching to sulfate free shampoo? That really helped my flaky scalp

qwertylal · 12/04/2023 21:57

I religiously use body shop ginger shampoo. Always notice if I miss using it and have to return as it's only thing that consistently works. Noticed recently they also do a ginger hair serum/oil, not tried it though.

I've read that Malassezia yeast is a link for exacerbating dandruff. I check the products I use in this website https://www.sezia.co/ and it has helped. Someone on this website recommended the site actually. I know it is supposed to be for children and isn't a dandruff shampoo but this one works (for me anyway) and smells delicious - https://www.childsfarm.com/products/childs-farm-2-in-1-shampoo-conditioner-organic-rhubarb-custard

Sezia

Sezia is an app that checks products for ingredients that promote the growth of malassezia.

Would rubbing Jamaican black castor oil into your scalp help? It is the oil from a nut, which has vitamins in it and is used to soothe irritated scalps. You should be able to get it from any African/ Caribbean body shop or grocery. The bottle should be dark in colour to preserve the vitamins, and can cost anything between £4-15 (volume dependent).

Apply sparingly to scalp shortly before washing or even more sparingly the night before washing. Then wash out as normal with your shampoo. Apply regularly throughout the week with your normal washing technique. Lots of videos on You Tube about its help.

What works for me is:

A course of T Gel medicated shampoo to get on top of it.

Then sulfate free shampoo (I use the Dr Organic range from Holland and Barrett) and applied with a silicone scalp brush to really deep clean the scalp...you can get them cheaply on Amazon.

Nizoral shampoo. Once you get it under control you can use it less then every wash and it doesn't smell awful like t gel

Cv8 · 12/04/2023 22:23

Thanks, everyone, for the helpful advice.

Try Kerium DS by La Roche Posay. Completely got rid of DD’s flaky scalp.

RosesAndHellebores · 12/04/2023 22:33

Head ans shoulders in the green bottles, including the little bottle of scalp balm. Revolutionary.

WaterBaby9 · 12/04/2023 22:45

Nizoral is a game changer. Used it twice and never saw a flake again!

lucy6058 · 12/04/2023 22:45

Another recommendation for Body Shops Ginger shampoo. Has sorted my dandruff completely

Charmatt · 12/04/2023 22:51

I had a long term problem with eczema on my scalp - really awful for years! I use Boots version of Nizoral. I used it twice and it cleared it up. I now use Arran Aromatics sage and seaweed shampoo (apothecary range) and then a single use of the Boots Nizoral if things deteriorate. Since I started, I've only had to use the Nizoral once in 9 months.

Whoknowswhatanymore · 12/04/2023 22:53

Nizarol again here too! It’s a serious life changer. Only use it when you need to but what a difference this makes and you don’t need a lot! Will never look back from this!

ThisGirlCantAlways · 12/04/2023 22:56

Another one for body shop ginger shampoo, however price has really increased in last couple of years from around £9 to £14! Worth it though!

literalviolence · 12/04/2023 23:04

I have to wash my hair every other day to stay on top of dandruff. If it flares up I step up to every day. When I first found that advice it really surprised me. I thought the wisdom would be to wash less often but actually this has completely sorted out the issue.

Also following.
I have a really dry scalp as well as thinning, flyaway hair which gets greasy really easily.

This is my go to as well.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/04/2023 23:26

Also make sure the water isn't too hot and when you dry it dry on a medium heat.

Moomoola · 12/04/2023 23:28

Olive oil left on overnight works too
