Term time only Ideas?

Just had to drop my kids off at nursery and a club and I cried. I love spending so much time with them as my little one is close to school age I would love to have term time only role. Getting rid of the stress of running around on the holidays would be amazing.

Downside is I am part time currently and around 30k. I do get some time off during the week with my youngest and can do the school run a few times a week.

I want to get out the corporate world, I’m finding it more and more soul destroying. I have a desire to be more in a role where I am contributing to society rather than making money for a exc board.

Any ideas on potential roles? I am from a STEM background and considering teaching but all teachers ever tell you is how horrible the job is. I wanted to be a teacher but i went down the path and always wonder.

School based careers advisers often work term time only. So you get to work in a school but without the stress of teaching.

You'd need to train though, and get either a L6 or 7 qualification but some schools will take you on while you train.
There's a skills shortage so lots of jobs.

@TearsforBeers oh that’s a great idea and right up my street!

The Career Development Institute (CDI) is a good place to start for info.

You earn 30k and work p/t
If you worked term time, for example in a school in a support role you would be taking a huge hit financially
I know others will say money isn't everything (and they're not wrong) but....
Be careful as many support roles in schools are not 9-3 anymore so you'd have to factor in wrap around care aswell
When my DD was little I started work in a school and missed out on being able to do school runs (great in one way but missed
out building friendships with school mums and the wrap around care was expensive!)

Re: careers advisors - many schools now use the online versions Sad

Teacher or TA but you’d need before and after school care, civil service also have term time roles available.

Anything that schools have to buy in and any school-based role that isn't literally essential will be very insecure. Schools can't afford them anymore.

Bluevelvetsofa · 11/04/2023 09:27

Teaching and young children aren’t a good mix.

skippy67 · 11/04/2023 09:38

Civil service, but it's a pain in the arse if down the line, you want to change your contract.

Schools have a statutory requirement to provide careers guidance and the person doing this has to be qualified to a minimum L6. Careers is essential.
There a huge skills shortage so if you hold a careers qualification you're pretty much guaranteed a job.

And if schools decide not to employ careers advisers then you can go and work in universities as they are also crying out for qualified careers advisers and they pay very well.

You could try working as an 'unqualified teacher' doing supply, you will not make anything like £30k but it is term time.

Cardiographer - lots of hospitals employ them part time, you don't need any specialist qualifications to start.

You would spend your day recording ECGs and possibly fitting 24 hour holter monitors and BPs.

Once your children are older you could look at becoming a clinical physiologist, they are the ones who actually read the ECGs and 24h hour halter monitor recordings, work in the cath lab, program pacemakers.

You will never be out of work, I was getting phone calls 10 years after I stopped (ill health and unsupportive department) working in cardiology.

One of my old bosses had virtually a 'pick your own hours' so I worked longer days 4 days a week and had Friday PM off, another member worked term time only, someone else on 3 days.

@sashh another great idea, I’m science and medicine based currently I shall add it to the list!

I assume you're good at maths. How about training to be a school business manager?

Showerpowerer · 11/04/2023 19:18

@Fifthtimelucky yes maths is a strong point and business manager would suit my skill set. I found one last year but it was all year round. No harm in having a look again thanks!

Teaching would require your primary school to have good wraparound options as secondary school (I assume you'd do that with your subject background?) and primary opening times, apart from anything else, aren't very well aligned. For example our preschool has no wraparound and that has precluded me from doing a cover job even at the local secondary because the hours aren't manageable on days when my partner is working in the office. In many ways teaching is one of the least flexible of jobs going, that said I am returning in future because having the holidays will be really valuable. But it's a very rigid working pattern.

If you're mathematically minded you could have a look at exams and data roles, they tend to be term time plus 10 days or so, so you would need a bit of holiday cover but not masses and it would be at predictable times. In my view exams officers don't get paid enough for the level of responsibility but it's certainly one that might closely fit your skills.

I do an admin job in Children’s Services and one of my colleagues does school hours and term-time only. May not pay enough for you though.
