Year 6 parents are you doing extra SATS revision at home?

As per my title really?

I know school are doing a lot of work with the children at school and it’s been recommended that we do some extra at home?

I am completely torn on this as we do the homework set by school which is all geared at the sats. On top of the homework set we do extra reading, maths busters and English bits and Bobs and have really worked on dc’s handwriting.

I am expecting that my child passes, all previous tests have shown that.

Do we need to do more?

My child is year 5 currently and he’s been doing SATS companion at home since September. I assume this will continue right up to the SATS in year 6. He really enjoys the work and I don’t have to persuade him to log on and complete the tasks fortunately.

Just the homework school sent home. Saying that we're in a grammar area, and any child like DS who passed the 11+ could do the SATs in their sleep.

The only people benefiting from stats are school why subject your child to more pressure so the school get more funding by showing 'added value of their teaching'? Once they start year 7 they are retested and streamed over the first term.

SATS tests how well the school is teaching a batch of children. A good school will not ladle the pressure on the families/children.
I'd do nothing

That’s nonsense. By the time they’re ks4 schools look at them as learners not targets.

i’ve had kids who really underperformed in their SATs (one because their mother died), and I know (because I’m a good teacher) that their target should be higher than it is so I treat them accordingly

Yeah, schools are obviously not going to be worrying about the children who underachieved in their sats as then they will be exceeding their targets! This is great for the school. Teachers will be under pressure to get as many students meeting or exceeding their targets as possible or else their progress 8 scores will suffer. Which is why in most schools all of the extra support in years 10 and 11 is targeted at the students who arent meeting their targets.

Homework is optional in primary. Schools should not be spending time on extra SATS work but should be using the time to continue with the curriculum.

No need. I think ideally kids will slightly under achieve compared to what they could do if they worked really hard. Then they will pleasantly surprise rather than disappoint their future secondary school teachers. (Speaking as a parent of older kids… )

We are BUT they started Sats preparation only recently at school and prior to that the Y6 didn’t have regular homework. Dd has ASD and struggles academically. We tried to do some with her 5 days a week, but she finds it so hard and hates it. It’s uncertain whether she will get ‘expected’ or below but it wouldn’t be good for her confidence if she fails so to me - she already thinks she’s stupid. I don’t want her to start secondary like that.

I suspect parents who say no have bright, self motivated kids who already do other homework and could pass with no extra work.

Ecatally whybim doing extra with my boy. School kept saying hes doing ok but I doubted that. Hes done two practice paper and is struggling with basic subtraction and division. Now I know I can help him with his gaps. He also keeps says hes stupid and always has. I'm trying to help him see that plugging the gaps will help his confidence

Schools don’t get more funding, not even a penny! Where did you get that rubbish from?! @jannier
