Would you bother applying for this job?

Not earning Megabucks but I work in my local authority.

My current job is very very flexible. WFH most of the time and my office is 2 min walk from home. Team is fab. Managers really supportive. I love working there and the job fits perfectly around my family life. Downside is job is a bit boring and can be quiet at times. Don't find it stimulating.. this is the only downside.

Was looking at a job which has come up in another department which is a grade higher.
After having used a salary calc, I'd be better off by £159/ m. I have no idea about this teams dynamic, what the managers are like, how much home working I can do etc. I do know their workload is high as I had dealings with a team within the department a couple of years ago and it seemed non stop.

Would you go for the other job or stay in current one for the convenience and flexibility?

Is it something you would find interesting in itself (rather than just busier), or is it a good career step?

If not, I wouldn’t risk it for a very small amount extra.

Stay in your current job, unless the higher grade leads to further progression and promotion, and that this is what you are looking for.

Can you talk to your boss and see if there are new things you can take on in your current role to make it more interesting? If everything else is perfect, I'd see if there's anything that can be done to address the 'being bored ' bit.

But actually, even if they can't, I'd stick with the boring job - there are far worse things than being a bit bored, but in a nice friendly team that works round your personal life. (I've tried both - the potentially interesting job I took turned out to be a nightmare; I've finally found a way to make the boring job more interesting, but had made peace with being bored in exchange for all the other good qualities of the job.)

I'd apply and see what happens.
Higher salary is likely to be higher employer pension contributions too.

Personally I would stick if you have a young family . The flexibility is worth alot and a straight forward job so you can enjoy family life. Is there any option for progression in your current department?

Suzi888 · 11/04/2023 08:25

I’d apply. Decide later!

If it’s a job I loved and I wasn’t losing money then nothing to lose. Ask about wfh and flexibility if you get offered the job.

Contact the hiring manager and have a talk Do you can get a feel for how they work

Quitelikeacatslife · 11/04/2023 08:59

You could apply and then if you get to interview then you are interviewing them as much as the other way round. It will be good practice if something you really like comes up. If you decide to stay is also good chance to start conversation with your boss to do more interesting tasks? Even if not more money as that is not massive motivator for you?

I wouldn't when you could be going from the frying pan to the fire! Unless there's an option to go and shadow in there first?!
