Call from ambulance service?

This evening my mum's friend called her to say that the ambulance service had called him and asked for my mum. I think he was a bit shocked and forgot to give my mum's own number. They called him twice. We don't know how they got my mum's friend's number and why they didn't call her directly.
Mum's been trying to call back but can't get through on that number.
They said the name of the ambulance service they were from which is where my sister lives.
The grandaughters were mentioned as giving them the number. My sister ( their mum) is due on her way back from London and the girls have been staying with friends. We've checked both girls are ok and they are fine but we can't get hold of my sister yet. We think they travelled by train. She doesn't always reply quickly anyway and they might be busy.
My nieces are fine and didn't know anything about it.
It's all a bit odd.

Hopefully it's just a very odd coincidence?

Any ideas?

This seems very odd! Have you heard from your sister yet?

Overthebow · 10/04/2023 21:39

Have you managed to get hold of her? It does seem strange.

crackthegg · 10/04/2023 21:48

Ty, sister is fine. We think it may be a scam or mum's phone hacked or something. It's very odd though as we live in totally different areas in UK (as does my mum's friend) so somebody knows my mums name, that she's friends with her friend and that she has granddaughters and what area they live in. 🤨

Totally weird and scammy. Why would the ambulance service call anyone? If they'd been called out to someone who had required treatment at a hospital, the hospital would call, not a paramedic.

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

I've been called by paramedics twice in order to let me know DH has had an accident and he's en route to hospital so it does happen.

Very strange! If it was a scam, I don't see what the angle would be? Ambulance services don't call and ask for money. Have they called the friend again?

EmmaEmerald · 10/04/2023 22:20

Asked for your mum for what reason?

piedbeauty · 10/04/2023 22:23

Right, @ShowOfHands , but that's a direct connection. The in the op is too vague.

If something happened to OP's mum, the ambo service would call op direct.

crackthegg · 10/04/2023 22:29

Yes, very odd isn't it that they have my mum's name but not her number? Her friend has no connection to my sister and her family. They don't have his number as far as I know and only met him once at a wedding.
I did read an article about a scam in the North asking people to take part in surveys for the service and trying to get personal details but then why not call my mum direct if that's what they are trying to do?

Emma, I think they said that her granddaughters had asked for her or given her name or something. Mum didn't speak to them directly so unsure exactly what they wanted her for. Of course, we thought the worst that something had happened and mum tried calling back on the number given by friend but couldn't get through.

And they called her friend twice.

A paramedic called me once when they were worried about my mum, so not necessarily a scam

LondonQueen · 10/04/2023 23:21

Could be a welfare call.

Hellocatshome · 10/04/2023 23:26

Possibly a scam to get her/the friend out of the house. My DGrandma had one saying your Grandaughter has had an accident you need to come to the hospital, luckily I was actually with her and I am her only granddaughter otherwise I think she 100% would have left the house to get the bus to the hospital.

Wow, that's scary. Glad it didn't go to plan.
My mum does come and stay at mine sometimes for the night (I'm local to her my sister in question is not).
It sounds like it could be someone local who knows both mum and her friend but also knows she has family in that part of UK🤔.

Blinky, but in this situation my sister and nieces knew nothing about it. They are all fine.

Have you googled the phone number ?

Schnooze · 10/04/2023 23:52

Yes, definitely Google the phone number.

crackthegg · 10/04/2023 23:55

I'd imagine her friend did as he's pretty clued up but I'll check tomorrow.
