If you wrote a novel, would you use a pseudonym or your own name?

I've always wanted to be a writer but it's fanfiction only at the moment Grin Maybe later in life.

I'd definitely use a pseudonym as my author name though. I like being anonymous.

Definitely a pseudonym.

BCBird · 10/04/2023 09:05

Depends on the content or if it a creditable novel🤣

I write novels. Think about using a pseudonym — no interviews, no profiles, no doing publicity to promote your work? Are you going to attend literary festivals with a bag on your head? Elena Ferrante only worked because that was so anomalous.

Oh I wouldn't want to be doing interviews anyway Grin My work would just blow everyone away..... eyeroll

L.o.l I have been thinking the same thing recently too
Depends on which context what kind of story it would be ,

It would be pseudonym if it was a Very personal nature story just cause of the potential risk of being far too outing ,
For e.g life story

If it was a children's story it would be my own name for sure

@StagsLeap

What kind of Novels do you write just curious?

Fiftysoon · 10/04/2023 09:10

Pseudonym. You can always change your name if you want to do interviews etc.

thecatsthecats · 10/04/2023 09:11

I use a pseudonym. I'd have no problem with my own name being on my book, but it's the promotion that makes me cringe to my roots. I can do it under my pseudonym, but not under my real name.

Another reason is that a large number of people have a sadly narrow idea of who can be a writer. They don't expect that people with my sorts of jobs can be creative, and if they write off you, they write off your books. So my pseudonym persona is also a bit "look, I'm a creative".

(went almost purple with rage at my GFIL because he banged on about "not thinking I was a creative sort of person" at Christmas for a bloody hour)

What genre do you write @thecatsthecats ? Do you earn any money? I need to earn 10k a year and want a career change so thinking about writing novels nothing prize winning just run of the mill reading fodder type books. I mean 50 shades of Grey was painful to read it was that bad but was successful so there is a market out there for mediocre writing.

Id use my name. Even if it turned out to be a blockbuster I don't think my friends would care - I have a couple friends who write books and it's just what they do.

I'm still getting round to sorting it out! Haha.

I was actually due to launch this quarter, but I've fallen pregnant and have done nothing but vomit.

I'm the wrong person to ask about the money side of things because I hated the publishing treadmill so much that I chose to launch self-published. My aim is to earn oodles of money in consulting, and launch the books myself, because that's the most enjoyable balance to me. The usual earnings are in the 6k region annually for a first time author.

I write fantasy.
