Carbon monoxide alarm has just gone off

It’s the ventilate symbol that’s flashing. I’ve opened the windows. What do I do ?
dh is really blaze says it might just be the glue that he’s been using today to fit the new wood floor but I’m worried I’ve candles lit and the log burner on.
I’ve no idea about co2 other than it’s a silent killer.

This is why I say you should have two alarms. I had one alarm, went off in the middle of the night I was sure it was faulty as I thought all the gas was off (in a caravan). I chucked it outside for a bit, brought it back in, went off again, in the end even the I still thought it was faulty I turned the gas off at the bottle. Went back to sleep.

went into town got a second alarm, went for a walk, had terrible stomach pains. Came back to the caravan, both alarms now up and the gas back on, felt really tired and fell asleep. Woke up to both alarms going off! Finally realised there was a problem.

Jesus. Lucky you’re here to tell the tale.

Don’t ignore CO alarms and go back to sleep, ever.

My young cousin died of carbon monoxide poisoning recently. Don't ignore alarms.

MyDarlingClementine · 10/04/2023 09:58

Ours went off and evry one told us including gas engineer who turned us off it woud probably be the actual detector going wrong because carbon monoxide is rare.

When actual proper person came out to look for cause he found it in our then gas oven!
So there was an actual leak.

Absolutely get it checked it out

Isanny · 10/04/2023 10:00

It sounds like you have a device emitting a very low level of CO.

@lljkk

I agree with this poster. Please get things checked out. You are so dismissive but long term low exposure to carbon monoxide can be harmful too. I have added a screen shot from the gov website.

Carbon monoxide alarm has just gone off

OP I hope you're ok.

My cousin went to bed one night and died.
Young, fit, healthy 19 year old. Faulty boiler.

It was CO.

Please don't ignore your CO alarms.

@Codlingmoths I missed the OPs last reply

Update.
we called them out and waited about an hour and half until a lovely chap turned up who was brilliant.
He used his detector thing to test around the boiler , the fire , in the loft. Basically everywhere and said it was all reading fine. When we told him we had been doing the house up and laying flooring he said it would be the solvent used. Said he’s seen it over and over again alarms going off because as the glue dries it gives off gases and if you’ve not got all your windows open the levels can get high enough to set off an alarm.
He also went to check out next door neighbours house.
So , alls well.
Moral of this story I guess is always ventilate your house big time if your using any glue / paint etc
if I’d have been on my own I would have called right away . it was my dh being his usual infuriating self that delayed it but I was in the shed right after the alarm went off with the dog and my children are adults and don’t live with me. Rest assured I would never have risked my kids !

This suggests having 2 alarms is a bad idea. Because you ignored it when only one was going off and became unwell as a result, only listening to it when you bought a second one and both went off. If the leak had have become worse or small children were sleeping near the leak it could have been far worse.

Have a decent carbon monoxide alarm installed in the recommended place, if it goes off call the gas number immediately as advised, if it turns out to be a false alarm be happy and buy a new alarm as you now no yours is faulty. Simple.

But if I’d had two from the start they’d both had gone off and I wouldn’t have thought they were both faulty. I did ring the emergency line but they don’t come out to caravans.

QuintanaRoo · 10/04/2023 10:51

But I do agree I’d never ignore even a single alarm again.

lljkk · 10/04/2023 11:19

tbf, my CO alarm only went off once. The fire alarm is much more sensitive and literally goes off if there is simply hot steam in the kitchen.

Don't think anyone is advising OP to "ignore" but rather that it may be possible to manage the risk without panic and assuming the worst.

OP: I hope you update when your investigation is done. It may only be to tell us that no cause was found, of course.

In fairness to those of us who replied to your post, it wasn't worded at all like a one off which is why we were concerned you sounded like you'd ignored it multiple times. Good to know that isn't the case. When it comes to these alarms, better safe than sorry is always always always the right course of action. You shouldn't watch and wait on this one.

meh, mine goes off when nothing at all is happening in the house. Weird devices.

Elasticatedwaist · 10/04/2023 18:22

@lljkk i have updated , all is well.
