Carpets in the dining room, yes or no?

Just as the title suggest. Is it bad practice to have carpet in a dining room. DH would like a neutral low pile carpet in room that is currently laminate. I was thinking a good vinyl with a rug under table. Opinions please.

I personally wouldn't go carpet because it's harder to manage spills. But I have a young child so depends on your usual guests?

We had, not out of choice, in two houses with young children and it was fine. I think we had a rug when they were toddlers. Just get a carpet that is scrubbable.

Definitely rugs only.

I wouldn’t.

Aquamarine1029 · 09/04/2023 15:22

I wouldn't have carpeting anywhere.

UndercoverCop · 09/04/2023 15:23

I don't like carpet downstairs, bedrooms yes. Hardwood floors and rugs downstairs. I wouldn't have vinyl in a dining room.

We always have, but it is very much personal taste.
For me, a rug seems the worst of both worlds.
I like carpet, but can understand why some people like a hard flooring. Can't understand why you would then put a rug on top of that.

Thank you. Moved in late last year, abd working our way through house. There is solid oak floor in living room, kitchen and hall way, cheap laminate in dining room and conservatory. We we going to put carpet in living room, and transform oak flooring from there to conservatory. Just unsure about dining room. We do have a carpet washer, so not too concerned about spills. Just us and child at uni. What is best if vinyl also frowned upon?

It can be quite cold and echoey (is that a word?)

Always had carpets in the dining room. Seems odd not to IMO.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 09/04/2023 15:35

I have LVT and a large rug.

I don’t think carpet belongs in a dining room.

clary · 09/04/2023 15:39

Ugh no.

We had (horrible) carpet (there when we bought house) in the dining room in our old house. It was yucky as my family are very messy.

No dining room in current house, dining table is in big kitchen on tiled floor. Much nicer.

MrsMitford3 · 09/04/2023 15:42

Moved from a fully carpeted house to one with no carpets and I'd never go back.

Unpopular opinion but I never think carpets are very nice for very long in reality and can tend to be on the grim side but think ppl stop seeing it when it is in their house
