It's a war film.
They are teaching different german words during an escape. Something to do with if you dont swear right they will know your not german.

Ring any bells to anyone?

The Great Escape, WWII film made in the 60’s?

ThisNameIsNotAvailable · 09/04/2023 12:13

Great escape I think

I don't think it was the great escape but around that age.

I could be wrong and it actually was.

We were doing today's Wordle and the conversation moved onto German swear words. That's how it came up.

The eagle has landed?

rogueone · 09/04/2023 12:19

Where eagles dare

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/04/2023 12:21

Off topic, but I disagree that todays Wordle is actually a word. Archduchess acronym yes. Word - no.

EarlofShrewsbury · 09/04/2023 12:22

'I dont think it was great escape. Its bugging me now. It was a really crap film but i just remember that bit with the teaching them to talk german n a guy sat listening is like no its not right you sound too formal n thats when they decide to swear.'

That's from my brother.

The Eagle Has Landed - probably not as it’s German soldiers disguised as Polish soldiers invading an English village.

That's what we were saying. Isn't it used in the army?

Hence the conversation moving to German swear words and army films.

Can you remember anyone who was in it. I think it could be Where Eagles Dare, Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood were in it. They definitely have to speak some German when they break into a German castle where they are rescuing some high ranking official. Can't remember more than that.

Actually thinking about it I don't think they did speak German, I think we were told they did but they didn't. I'm confusing myself now, think I'll have to watch it, probably 40 years since I saw it so it's a bit of a distant memory.

EarlofShrewsbury · 09/04/2023 12:34

I'm probably going to have to disappoint you all.

It my brothers vague memory, not mine, and from asking him questions it seems like it was a b movie and he wouldn't remember the name even if you told him.

A Google search says not a word of German is spoken in Where Eagles Dare, no subtitles, everyone just speaks in their English or American accent, it’s kinda funny, it’s all on the costume dept. I now want to rewatch all three films!

JohnWick4 · 09/04/2023 12:40

@EarlofShrewsbury No worries, I’m just killing time until a Skype family call. There are lots of b&w propaganda movies by Noel Coward with actors like Dickie Attenborough, could be one of those. I personally love those films.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 09/04/2023 12:43

I only knew today's Wordle because it was the name of a band, back in the 70s I think. Google says it's an informal word in N. America but doubtless a lot of Brits would struggle today.

Yes it was like a weird mind trick, they were supposed to be speaking to Germans in a German castle in a war and either no one noticed they were speaking English or we were just tricked in to believing they were. I really want to watch it again aswell.

JohnWick4 · 09/04/2023 12:53

Colditz Story?

@Iwasafool great films.

JennyTheDonkey · 09/04/2023 12:57

Inglorious Basterds has a scene where they know someone isn't what they seem as they hold up a number made with their fingers differently to how most German's would. For example if I want to show 3 I'd hold my middle 3 fingers up but German's would hold thumb, index and middle.

Gingernaut · 09/04/2023 13:00

Stalag Luft from 1993

Allied POWs take over a camp and learn German to fool the SS inspections

poshme · 09/04/2023 13:49

DH also says Stalag Luft. 1993 Stephen fry was in it. I seem to remember he was an arsehole in it.

I must be German!

What about Escape to Victory, that was pretty terrible?!

Oh I remember taking DS to see it for a birthday treat with a group of his friends. They loved it. I think the only one they loved more was The Last Starfighter, group of boys about 8 or 9 and they were all there, ready to be the one to save the world.

I must be German as well, can't speak a word but definitely can signal 3 properly.

Typecasting then? I'm not a fan.

Yes, we discussed that one but it isn't what he is thinking of.
