Teenage girl has thick, frizzy hair, we've tried a range of products, styles and drying techniques but no luck. Anything worked for you or your children?

It sounds like she's probably got curly hair and she's trying to be straight (been there, got the t-shirt). My method works for me but it's taken a loooong time to perfect.

I wash and condition my hair and then, when it's been given a quick squeeze but is essentially still very wet, I put on leave-in conditioner (my choice is Charles Worthington in an orange tube). I work it through and then wrap my hair in a microfibre towel. I leave is wrapped up while I get dressed and then in unwrap it. At this point I start to treat it like it's made of glass - absolutely no combing or brushing (I brush it really well just before I wash it). I use my fingers to find my parting and once it's parted I use flat hands to run gel over my hair (no fingers through my hair because that just breaks up the curls and creates frizz). I then scrunch upwards gently to encourage the curl to form. I use Umberto Giannini curly hair gel.

I air-dry my hair. It takes hours (literally). I still have damp hair in the late afternoon, but I also have nicely defined curls. I only wash my hair twice a week. On non-wash days I use damp hands and a bit of curl cream to scrunch my curls back to life.

My method might, or might not, work for your daughter. What works for one person doesn't always work for another. Good luck!

there are lots of groups on face book fir curly hair.
i'm the same as the person who replied.
i never ever brush my hair i have a wide toothed comb and comb it out when it's full of conditioner.
i do use a diffuser attachment on the hairdryer which works for me
When i think of all the time and effort i put into trying to straighten it even used to get my mum to iron it !!
all a waste of time the slightest bit of moisture in the hair and it just frizzed up again
good luck i know the struggle is real but if she can embrace the curls it will be so much better in the end

Curly hair hidden by brushing. Never brush unless wet and with conditioner. Use curly products (takes time to find the right one) and allow to dry naturally. Use a curl cream when dry to reduce frizz and hold the curl

Agree with PP. I only ever brush my hair when wet with conditioner.
I also use curl crème to make my curls more defined.
Always air dry my hair. It takes longer but looks hideous otherwise.
I wash my hair twice a week.

Find a Youtube curly hair vlogger with similar hair to your DDs.

Explore curly hair products (there are loads of brands) especially those designed for black hair as generally they are way better.

Basics would be:
Never brush hair, afro comb if you have to when wet and conditioned
Insane quantities of conditioner plus a leave in conditioner
Strong hold gel to keep the curls
Air dry or diffuser

Wet hair, comb through conditioner, rinse, wrap in towel, comb through more conditioner and leave to air dry. My current favourite product is Cantu cream for kids. I used a conditioner, but it flaked off when dry so I looked like I had terrible dandruff! Curling cream doesn’t do that.

Thanks everyone. Time is against her at the moment as she will wash her hair before school and if its not dried with a dryer then it can still be wet when she comes home from school, the same if she showers at night, she won't go to bed with it wet so it needs drying. I think the tips of youtube videos are the way to go, then she can start seeing for herself which method is best.

There are loads of curly hair vloggers on Youtube. Unfortunately I can't recommend you one as my type of curly hair is different, but when I found one with similar length and textured hair to mine it was great! She does all the hard work for you!

If she needs to dry it, section and twist it to encourage the curls, then diffuse it (still in sections, if her hair is thick). Lots of product, twice as much as she thinks she needs.

Turning a normal hairdryer on curly hair is basically a fast-track to frizz.

I recently had hair Botox. Loved it. Doesn’t affect the curl, but it just smooths it and makes it look neater and more manageable.

My son has impossibly thick coarse wavy/frizzy hair .His also stays wet for 24 + hours .Or what I call the undercoat does .
Drying it with a hairdryer would result in a huge mess .Could your daughter go to school with it damp/wet but tied back ?

Son never brushes ,only wide tooth ,afro pik combs when it's wet .Has it relaxed with this every 6 months by a home hairdresser ,but you could probably DIY.

He uses Olaplex ,4in1 https://www.salonsdirect.com/olaplex-4-in-1-moisture-mask-370ml
