...or field glasses ?
Sandpaper or glasspaper ?
Sitting room or living room (or lounge, drawing room etc) ?
Cutlery or irons ?
Dining table or dinner table ?
Footpath or pavement (I know, they're not necessarily the same thing) ?
Lead or leash ?
Glass or tumbler ?
Mug or beaker ?
Tea or dinner (or supper) ?

BTW, I don't know anybody who calls binoculars 'field glasses'. It sounds very old school Ministry of Defence!

I'd say pub and bar are two different things!
Starters
Dessert

WildRosie · 08/04/2023 21:31

I've never heard of jacks as a toilet pseudonym. The jack is Australian slang for syphilis!

I agree that pub and bar are two different things but that may not be the case in all parts of the UK.

I take a dim view of anyone who says 'bathroom break' or 'comfort break' when what they really mean is a halt in proceedings for the spending of pennies and the powdering of noses😉.

Knockers.
sandpaper
living room
table
path and pavement. A path is a narrower, untarmaced surface. A pavement the more formal of the two.
lead
glass or beaker
mug. A beaker is a glass.
Tea.

Words to confuse folk:

Costner. No, not the actor. It means ‘I can’t’
Nesh. A person who feels the cold more than others. “Thar a bit nesh theyt”

it’s like another language here though, especially when older folk get together. My late father slipped into a language I understood barely half the words of when he met anyone of a similar age.

twosquashedmelons · 08/04/2023 21:43

Maybe 'jacks' is an Irish thing, very common here!

Knives and forks.

We're slowly learning to stop dragging our knuckles.

Hellocatshome · 08/04/2023 22:50

I've just remembered my Grandma used to call cutlery 'weapons'.

vipersnest1 · 08/04/2023 22:53

Tea: late afternoon / early evening meal at home.
Dinner: meal out somewhere (maybe someone else's house), same timing as above.
Supper: late evening meal, usually at home.
I might be a bit weird about this - I was brought up working class, but married into middle class.

"You left them in the toilet"

All this variety of words from different languages, how lucky we don't have an Institute to give us a 'standard' the way they have in France.
