Hanging out washing tomorrow

It has been suggested to me that hanging out washing tomorrow is not OK due to it being one of the holiest days of the Christian year. I'm going to do it anyway, none of our neighbours show any signs of being religious of any type, and it's going to be a good drying morning.

Surely this is an outdated and weird idea? Or am I in the wrong for gathering up the towels ready to put a wash on first thing?

Why is this even a question? It's going to be dry and sunny where I live tomorrow. If I was going to be at home you can be certain I'd be doing some washing. I've hardly been able to put washing out this year.

I expect it will rain when I'm back on Monday Hmm.

NormalForNuneaton · 08/04/2023 17:55

The only thing I've heard of regarding washing is that you shouldn't do your washing on New Years Day as you'll wash away all your good luck and good fortune, never heard about not hanging out washing on any religious holidays

hattie43 · 08/04/2023 17:57

With this countries weather we have to do it between the rain , religion or not we need clean and dry laundry

Mistletoewench · 08/04/2023 18:19

Oh god this reminds me of my grandmother who said never wash in New Year’s Day as you will wash someone out of your family.

Haggisfish3 · 08/04/2023 18:21

This is absolutely used to be a thing on west coast Scotland/islands . Probably still frowned upon by some.

I presume it must hanker back to the days when the Sabbath was expected to be kept as a day of rest. I'd say it was a 'Sunday' thing rather than an 'Easter Sunday' thing. However, I don't think many keep Sunday as a day of rest anymore.
As a Church goer myself, I've never come across anyone who wouldn't hang washing out on a Sunday.

Hall84 · 08/04/2023 18:29

Definitely a thing not to hang washing out on a Sunday and I'm not that old! If I was home tomorrow I'd definitely be hanging it out though - needs must in this drying weather with no dryer!

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 08/04/2023 18:31

It's coming from a rather traditional elderly Christian. I'm inclined to quote "You are nearer to God in a garden (pegging out the washing) than anywhere else on earth".

I'm not worried or anything like that. Amused and rolling of eyes.

Was brought up religious and washing was never hung out on any Sunday much less Easter Sunday. Grass was not cut either. Chores only and go to church. Veg all prepped the night before. That type of thing.

DustyLee123 · 08/04/2023 18:34

I’ve just put a load of washing out now for tomorrow. Hopefully it’s too cold for the spiders to get their willies out !

SertralineAndTherapy · 08/04/2023 18:34

As someone who should know once said, "the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."

BooksAndHooks · 08/04/2023 18:35

I’ve got a load on now to hang out overnight. But wouldn’t waste the last dry day.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 08/04/2023 18:37

We were always told not to wash any clothes on Good Friday as the water would turn to blood.

Now I am an adult, I realise this may feasibly have been put about many years ago by women who were sick of chores and wanted to put their feet up on Good Friday. I can report I did three loads yesterday and all was well. Phew.

My gran lived on Lewis and no-one hung washing out on a Sunday when I was little and went to visit. I remember my mum telling me when she was small new people had moved to the island and hung washing out on the sabbath, apparently the church elders had paid them a visit about it.

Thaone · 08/04/2023 18:43

I live in a highly catholic area. Doing washing on a Sunday is a no go. Hanging washing out on Easter Sunday … someone would probably call the police. Not even joking.

Empra123 · 08/04/2023 18:45

I shall be hanging mine out before going to church.

Bamboux · 08/04/2023 18:46

I'm Jewish so will hang my clothes out whenever I want. While eating herring.

PuppyMonkey · 08/04/2023 18:49

Well I bet when Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday, his robe could have done with a good 90 degree cycle. Wink

LubaLuca · 08/04/2023 18:53

Jesus is coming - look busy. He'd want you to get your washing out in the fresh air and carry on with whatever you need to do.

I'm lucky to live in an area with apparently no zealots, so I'll be pegging out with gay abandon as usual on bright days.

Yes this was what my friends family were like although that had bible readings and a service in their front room other people would come they would take it in turns. They were farmers so would have to do some minimum work on a Sunday.
