Just so many dogs nowadays, or is it just me?

Away for the weekend at a typical British seaside town in Anglia and am quite shocked at just how many people have dogs now. Am sure there never used to be quite this many, or maybe I am just more observant now I have a child who isn’t keen (on bigger dogs).

Reckon I’ve seen well in the hundreds today, I’d say at least every other family or couple had a dog. So many labradoodles / toy poodles, cockerpoo’s, pugs everywhere.

Some people looked to be almost dragging dogs around the shops in really busy / small lanes of endless gift shops, then waiting for friends/family outside shops (as no dogs allowed) some with fairly stressed looking dogs😢

Is this the lockdown puppy effect in full force now? Just everyone and their pal has a dog now.

OP....the best cure for a child who isn't keen on dogs is a lovely puppy for the family.

I love love love my dogs and dog people are the very best people 🐶

I’m sure you meant well, but no, that’s really not the cure.

I will probably upset some but ,I’m one of those who finds it weird when kids are scared of dogs , I think most will come from the parents .
I grew up without dogs and was even bitten by a stray dog when I was 9 but I was never hysterical as some of the children I see these days , it’s not normal to be that scared of anything , specially a dog .
We now have a small dog who adores everyone including kids and other dogs and I love it we can take her anywhere . I remember thinking the same as some of you here and questioning why people would just take their pets everywhere but completly understand now as they are just an extension to our family and we all miss her so much if she is not with us .

You try having something bigger than you that's bouncing and trying to knock you over snarling and barking in your face. No matter what you do you can't make it go away, it's totally out of your control what happens while this huge smelly fur ball invades your space, or worse, bites you.

Imagine an adult sized dog - one that has its face level with yours - being a dog in your face then try seeing where the fear may come from.

I live in Southwold, and was saying the exact same thing today! I put it down to a combination of easter and that dogs are not allowed on the beach atm.

Have you ever had a puppy? I'm sure a child whose scared of dogs will get on great with a nippy, teething puppy, even better when its bouncing all over them.

MortimerTheCat · 08/04/2023 21:54

We went to the coast yesterday and there we loads of dogs, seemed like half of them were cockerpoos or similar

Pipps80 · 08/04/2023 21:56

What is your problem?

Pipps80 · 08/04/2023 21:57

There are no issues. People are miserable and unhappy. That's all.

Not normal anyway unless the child is not neurotypical imo where fears tend to be less logical . Children are not naturally scared , we have a 1 year old ( my youngest as have more children ) and even her , we just meet some friends dogs for the first time , one of which was a 8 month old large breed so still a bit bouncy and although she initially observed them from afar it only lasted 30 seconds , kids do not get upset over licking or even falling over from playing with a dog , they only do it when their parents over react .
off course I’m not talking about burying but that’s a extreme behaviour not what’s being discussed here

Leave the mutt's at home, they don't want or need to be dragged around all day.

This, in spades.

Too many dogs and not enough cats. I plan to fix this imbalance if I ever get elected.

KittyAlfred · 08/04/2023 22:19

@Mumwomansisterdaughter are you aware that some children get badly hurt by dogs, and can naturally feels scared of them afterwards?

We have both cats and dogs. And loads of other rescue other animals too. They’re way better than most people. 🤭

I bet half of them were called 'Teddy'.

This, in spades.

If you are on holiday with your dog, you can't leave them at home.

SwordToFlamethrower · 08/04/2023 22:27

People can't afford kids so they satisfy their biological urge to nurture a small cute creature by getting a pet. So naturally, they think their dog or cat should have human privileges... and they even think their wants as pet owners trump parents of human children.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 08/04/2023 22:29

When a 4-5 year old goes into a town and not one, but two dogs jumps at them, plants their paws on them or barks in their face, despite being on leads, and their owners do sweet FA, then funnily enough, they develop a fear of dogs.

I have literally never met any pet owner who thinks the needs of their pet trumps that of a human. I think that is a MN trope trotted out by dog haters.

On (yet) another dog thread, there was someone actually complaining that a dog friendly cafe would offer a small dog biscuit to canine customers, and that their own children did not get a freebie too.

It is absolutely normal and rational to develop a fear of something that caused, or had the potential to cause, you harm. That's how the brain and body work. "This caused Ow, no touch again, no ow again"

I specifically mention that getting hurt by dogs is the exception .

Teddy for the boys and Luna for the girls

Anotherdaymorenames · 08/04/2023 22:41

Teddy is always a doodle/poo and Luna is always a husky.
