Mirena misery

On day 7 of a fairly painful heavy period that started a few days after my Mirena was put in nearly two weeks ago. I was really hoping for lighter or no periods, less pain, more sex, none of this is happening and it feels never ending. The stuff I've read is so vague as 'everyone is different'!
Anyone had this then things have improved?! I don't feel like there is anything seriously wrong just a very long period.

First 3 months to settle bit bumpy and then another further few months of lighter periods & then very very occasional periods - very light. I’m on my 2nd one now and it has changed my life.

Endometriosis suffer so can now function like a normal person! I haven’t needed any further operations (for 20 years needed every 3-5 years.) I had such heavy periods and pain (every two weeks) six months of settling was worth it for me. But everyone is different, I know some people who hated it - my reasons for it outweighed the first bumpy months.

@MyBloodyMaryneedsmoreTabasco Not for me either, being wombless now I'm done having kids has been amazing, zero downsides. I wish it was a more accessible option for women.

@emmathedilemma poor you that sounds horrendous! Well done for sticking it out I'd have given up I think. The things us women go through. 😫

I had mine fitted 4 months before Covid lockdown. I got thrush, BV and spotted constantly. Was told it would settle. It didn’t. Ended up on pill as well to stop the bleeding. That worked. But I wasn’t too keen to use 3 forms of BC. Had to wait till the February to get it removed. 18 months of bleeding and I was still told it would settle!

mow on pill and that suits me better.

I had mine fitted about four weeks ago as part of a hysteroscopy procedure to investigate fibroids. I was like you, I started a typically heavy period not long after and was terrified the damn thing was going to bleed out. The bleeding has finally stopped now🤞🏼Although my boobs are now very sore, usually a sign that my period is due, so who knows. I'm peri and on HRT so maybe everything's just a bit haywire and still settling down.

I do feel like if the mirena doesn't sort out the heavy periods that I will be attempting to demand a hysterectomy because I am just so tired of it all. Years of heavy bleeding, huge clots, anaemia, flooding, having to use both a mooncup and pads for several days a month. It's exhausting.

@Arcadia I've heard the ibuprofen thing too and have taken it often during my periods for the pain. I can't say I've noticed it helped the bleeding, but neither did Tranexamic acid. My periods have been unstoppable though. If you do try ibuprofen, don't use it longer than three days and make sure you take it on a full stomach to mitigate the risk.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 14/04/2023 09:09

Took my first 8 weeks to settle down. I was 35 at the time. It stopped my periods completely after that and I had one Mirena after another right through menopause and had the last one taken out last year at 64. Literally lifechanging for me. Give it a few more weeks if you can, if it does work for you it’s fantastic.

Thanks for all the responses.
Feeling more optimistic now as it has settled down, only light bleeding now (probably more 'spotting' than bleeding) and no period pains for a week or so.

@AnonymousHippopotamus do you mean the risk of it damaging the stomach lining?

@Arcadia yes that's what I meant

Argh a month on and I'm still bleeding daily. It's not huge clots or anything but has just increased again after a couple of weeks if lighter flow and it's more like a full on period again with period pain.
Where's it all coming from??!!!
I've made an appointment to speak to the nurse next week and potentially schedule to have it removed in June once I've given it 3 months if no improvement.

I've been bleeding again, lightly, for the last eleven days. It seems to be tailing off again now🤞🏻 They say you need to give it six months to settle down, so I'm just trying to resign myself to things being all over the place for the next few months. I hope it gets better for you @Arcadia

Arcadia · 26/04/2023 17:29

Hi @AnonymousHippopotamus thanks for the reply sorry to hear your bleeding is still going too!
In my own mind six months is too much for me to wait, as that is equivalent to having 24 periods end to end without a break!
So I am going to give it until mid/end of June then make them take it out as my normal periods are a bit annoying but not as bad as yours sound, so it's not worth it for me as I also quite liked the progesterone tablets I was on before
Can't really remember why I had the damned thing put in now!!
