Why has my 7 year old got bags under their eyes? (pics attached)

Since the beginning of the year dd (7) started with bags on and off under her eyes. They are now there most of the time. The skin can get dry so I have been applying moisturiser. Recently she has also been looking pale. We have see our GP who has done full set of bloods that have all come back normal. She eats well and has a good varied diet so no concerns there. GP has said though she is underweight for her age. We have no idea what is causing it and what we can do to help it. Any suggestions gratefully received, thank you.

They’re not bags. Maybe she’s dehydrated? If the GP has said she’s u dear weight then she needs to eat more, or at least increase her calorie intake.

CurlsLDN · 08/04/2023 08:14

I would call those folds of skin not bags? I could be wrong but I thought the usual definition of bags under the eyes was dark shadows caused by tiredness, not extra skin. Is it not just the shape of her face?

Smokingonthestairs · 08/04/2023 08:16

They’re not bags, but could she have an allergy?
I know a child with pollen allergies with similar.

Allergies, tell tale sign of an atopic child

DS pollen allergies are off the chart at the mo

LouLou198 · 08/04/2023 08:19

Thank you all
@Soontobe60 I have been trying to increase her fluid intake.

@CurlsLDN yes I suppose it is extra skin rather than bags, she hasn't always had them though?

@Smokingonthestairs I might give some antihistamines a try.

Have you been to an opticians?

LouLou198 · 08/04/2023 08:21

@Matchingcollarandcuffs I will look into this further.

@Blort she is due a routine check up in the next couple of months so I will get onto that.

Thank you

Looks like a form of eyelid dermatitis. The skin anywhere around the eye can become dry, sometimes itchy and irritated depending on its form. It can make the skin under the eye a little puffy resulting in what looks like eye bags as such.
Needs a cream from the GP.

MellowMelly · 08/04/2023 08:38

@Matchingcollarandcuffs is correct and @Smokingonthestairs suggestion to try antihistamines would be a great idea

EyesOnThePies · 08/04/2023 08:44

Hay fever. Or other allergy. Have you got a cat? Does she play at a house where there is a cat?

Mine are terrible atm. Anti-allergy drops, and a one-a-day non drowsy anti histamine will help if it is this.

starfish4 · 08/04/2023 08:53

Not sure what moisturiser you've been applying, but only get one recommended by the pharmacist or GP, as the eye is a sensitive area. Have you asked her if they feel itchy. If so, then definitely look at antihistermines and eye drops (they feel odd initially, but really do help my eyes).

Does she feel ok in herself?

Bearpawk · 08/04/2023 09:05

Looks like some form of allergies/ excema/ dermatitis to me

difficultlemons · 08/04/2023 09:13

Yes it's dermatitis I think op. I had similar as a child related to eczema

Tessisme · 08/04/2023 09:15

DS2 is 10 and he has flaky skin around his eyes and eyelids. He was prescribed a hydrocortisone cream which I use sparingly and which clears it up nicely. He does have IBD though and is often 'run down' and the dermatitis seems to coincide with periods of him feeling a bit under the weather. He also has asthma which often goes hand in hand with dermatitis/eczema.

HidingFromDD · 08/04/2023 09:18

Did the gp check for worms?

Tessisme · 08/04/2023 09:18

Actually, just to say, hydrocortisone ointment is better than cream as it is thicker and can be applied in a more targeted way. The cream slides all over the place!

LouLou198 · 08/04/2023 10:00

Thanks everyone for your replies, very helpful. GP did not know what was wrong with her eyes and advised me to use the Avino cream she already has on prescription (she has very dry skin)
The pharmacy near us is very good so I will pop and see if they can sell me a cream over the counter whilst it is bank holiday weekend. @HidingFromDD I am intrigued about worms? She had them a couple of years back, no symptoms of them now.

I had a friend who got similar when she had too much sugar. When it happened she had to cut literally ALL sugar out, including ketchup etc

Hotcrossed · 08/04/2023 10:13

i remember the HV asked me if my dd ate fish fingers,
it was the breadcrumbs apparently

Smokingonthestairs · 08/04/2023 11:03

Have a Google of dennie Morgan lines op?

LouLou198 · 08/04/2023 11:30

@Time4achangeagain and @Hotcrossed both interesting points, thank you.

@Smokingonthestairs thank you, I have had a look and that is exactly what it looks like!

Looks like an allergic reaction to me plus she's dehydrated as well I'd say.
