Technical question on winning the lottery

PolkaDotMankini · 07/04/2023 13:25

Say I won the lottery and wanted to anonymously give someone £100k, or pay off their mortgage. How would I do it? I wouldn't have their bank details or want them to know it was me.

You hire an accountant!

Iamclearlyamug · 07/04/2023 13:28

I wonder this too but I don't think it would be possible to do without them knowing.

I dream about this stuff way too often 😅😅

Changeau · 07/04/2023 13:28

The same as if you wanted to give them a fiver. You couldn't.

CarbunclesAreUncles · 07/04/2023 13:30

This would absolutely be my favourite thing about winning the lottery! Wouldn’t it be wonderful?

Changeau · 07/04/2023 13:30

Also if 100k appeared in my bank account I'd be very worried.

LIZS · 07/04/2023 13:31

It would flag money laundering concerns!

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 07/04/2023 13:31

They give you an accountant who helps you give your money as gifts. You have lifelong access to said accountant, counsellors, security people etc should you want them.

SmallAngryPenguinWoman · 07/04/2023 13:32

Pretty sure you couldn't do it without them knowing, but maybe could anonymously 🤔
Wouldn't there be tax implications for them with that much money?
Is there a reason why you want to do it that way?

It wouldn’t. They are very experienced in managing this. You get a new bank account with Coutts.

That's great, but what about the person who suddenly has 100k appear in their account and noone knows who from?

Not if you win a million you dont

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 07/04/2023 13:34

Ah. I missed the ‘anonymous’ thing. Sorry!

Yes you do. If you want it.

LIZS · 07/04/2023 13:43

@YellowAndGreenToBeSeen a sudden large deposit from unknown source would.

MeinKraft · 07/04/2023 13:45

I presume your accountant/person from the lotto/solicitor could draft a letter to the person saying that someone who wishes to remain anonymous has received a large sum of money and wishes to give them £100,000 as a gift, and ask them to contact them with their bank details.

cisisaslur · 07/04/2023 13:49

Puts on a euro millions ticket in the hope I get it be of these accountants

Nagado · 07/04/2023 13:52

I’ve put a bit of thought into this, especially when I should be working. I’d use a solicitor and pay money into their client account. They’d contact my person and tell them that someone they know has come into some money but wishes to remain anonymous. They can then hand the money over, making clear that my person would be liable for tax. There would be a clear cash trail for any financial audits so no issues with money laundering.

There may well be some financial/legal reason I couldn’t do this, but that would be my plan.

WestOfWestminster · 07/04/2023 13:52

You'd hire a solicitor to get in touch with them letting them know someone anonymously wanted to gift them some money and ask them to provide their mortgage/bank details etc.
That way the person would only know about the solicitor, not you.

PolkaDotMankini · 07/04/2023 13:53

Of course it would be my fancy new solicitor/accountant! Can you tell I don't have millions yet?

To the person who asked why be anonymous: If I came into spectacular wealth then I'd want to share it around in a way that didn't affect my relationships. Can you imagine how awkward it would be otherwise?

"Ooo, polkadotDS should be in detention but his mum funded our payrise, can't do that!"

"No, DH, we have to invite polkadotmankini, she paid off our mortgage! Yes, I know she's a crashing bore, but we can't not."

"DN! Be nice to auntie polkadotmankini! When she dies, you'll get £££!"

Due to money laundering you need to declare where money is from, if you could find out their mortgage company then it may then be possible using a solicitor or accountant to add legitimacy

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 07/04/2023 14:03

LIZS · 07/04/2023 13:31

It would flag money laundering concerns!

Which would be answeed in seconds when you said where you'd got the money from

I don't see why that would be a consideration

DianePemberley · 07/04/2023 14:09

I can't help but think, that if I got an email from a solicitor or anyone claiming "someone wants to gift you £100K, please let me know your bank details" I would be suspicious that it was a scam.
Even if I knew the solicitor had a business in my town for the last 20yrs.

When I get this email, how will I know it isn't a scam?
Also, if this could happen soon that would be great, please and thank you. 🙂

TheJudgeandJury · 07/04/2023 14:11

I'm happy to send you my bank details op Grin

I don't actually know. It's a really interesting question and probably a nice problem to have haha.

How would you answer if you'd received the money anonymously? That would trigger all kinds of money laundering red flags.

MargaretThursday · 07/04/2023 14:14

If anyone would like to test it by using my bank account then I'm happy to pretend it's anonymous. 🤣

I suspect you could do it through a third party, or maybe an accountant has a better way.
