What do you wear on a flight

Normally I'm a joggers and t shirt sweatshirt kinda person comfy and unlikely to want to wear them on the trip so can handle the plane grime.

But I'm always envious of those lovely looking ladies at 5am checking in in a maxi dress and denim jacket and sandals. Sometimes a jaunty trilby. Elegantly styles with a Gucci disco.

Sometimes I am able to in august but I'm going to canaries tomorrow and it's a four hour flight, Chilly here and warm there. And even then it's a pair of culottes and a t shirt.

I'm always far to hot even in thin joggers when I get to the other end. And I feel unquestionably and soften unable to change quickly scruffy!

I'll probably wear harems and a tshirt and denim jacket! And trainers.

That's my go to. Usually a cardi too, I get cold on planes. I always pack a pair of shorts and flipflops to change into on arrival if it's going to be hot.

I've never thought maxi dresses and flowy skirts were practical for plane travel. I'd be worried I'd trip on the plane steps or have a Marilyn moment 😂. Trousers always for me.

I get ya OP. I'm always totally envious of those glamorous ladies at 5am in the check-in queue. I usually look like a sack of shit. This year I'm flying first class long haul for the first time ever. I would love to look glamorous but even with a lot of effort I would never look glamorous. I've got comfy clothes to change into on the plane as I'll turn my seat to a bed and sleep for sound 8-10 hours. But at the airport I'll probably wear black leggings with a long top and black trainers. The leggings could be mistaken for tights. I'll have a non designer bag big enough for change of clothes and purse, phone, passport etc
I dream of wafting through the airport in total glamour. It will only ever be a dream sadly.

I haven't tried this myself yet, but maybe hire a pilot's uniform on the off chance of getting a free upgrade!

(One just has to hope that the real pilot doesn't pass out and they ask you to help!)

I have a structured poncho thing as it is long and covers my back properly (tall), that and running leggings with compression socks and runners
I might throw the runners through the wash before I go as they have fruit juice on them from helping a friend harvest.

I see those women at check in but never on the plane.....probably not in cattle class with me :)
Probably easier to be fabulous when you are not squished into a chair that you have your carry on shoved under.

Doidontimmm · 09/04/2023 08:42

My legs and feet are always freezing on flights so always wear long trousers fluffy socks & trainers!

Good news, they're all just as unglamorous and slobby in first class. Particularly if you get the free pyjamas so all the passengers look like they're on a yoga retreat.

We had a talk for a school rugby trip to Canada and a parent went mad that the boys were advised to wear shorts on the plane. She said that you have a high risk of friction burns if you have to use the emergency chute and shorts (and presumably skirts) should be banned.

It may be a fair point but, as someone else said, highly unlikely. The rugby teacher resisted the urge to roll his eyes and I suspect was more worried about keeping 80 resourceful teenagers away from alcohol for two weeks than emergency chute wear.

It depends where I’m going, if it was a city break where I take just hand luggage, I usually travel in ‘nice’ joggers, trainers, a vest top with a light knit jumper, then my oversized denim jacket over the top.

If I’m going somewhere hot, I swap the joggers with a lighter fabric trouser, usually tapered, trainers , white tee with a chunky cardi over the top. The cardi doubles up as a nice cushion on the plane too.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/04/2023 09:45

Tenerife

3/4 leggings and strappy top and cardi for the colder evenings so don't need to pack it

Sandals as like to take shoes off on a plane as feet swell

I am 100% comfort long skirt and long sleeve top with a cardigan/ jacket

I can't stand trousers/jeans not a look thing I just hate wearing them

cherrypied · 09/04/2023 10:01

I've found my people!

You have helped me decide that I will not be a "floaty lady". I will be a "comfy lady".

Canaries is so awkward. 4-5 hours of jammed in ness I'll be a crumpled mess by arrival.

Ok so it's hareems TEVAS (controversial!) t shirt and denim jacket. And a maybe a cardigan if get cold? Maybe a scarf? Maybe a spare pair of trainers? Maybe a dress to change into?

And I'm back to square one!

short haul I wear a dress on the plane because they’re hotter than the sun

I generally find planes too cold, so I always wear layers. I have never felt too hot on a plane.
I wear comfortable trousers, T-shirt/vest top and a cardigan or jacket. My feet are always cold on a flight so I tend to wear socks and trainers.

BasilNotBrush · 09/04/2023 10:11

I have never been anything but frozen solid on the plane. Jeans and a tshirt, with cardigan.

My problem with sandals is when they make you take them off and walk through the scanners barefoot. Eurgh.

RampantIvy · 09/04/2023 10:29

I would like to know which airlines have warm planes.

whathaveidonetomydc · 09/04/2023 11:24

I always assume the 'glamorous' travelers are the ones who buy an "airport outfit" and don't travel very often. Why would you make a special effort for a flight? It's a mode of transport.
I flew to a ME country once and was seated beside a very pretty but scruffily dressed young woman. She was wearing riding boots over a tracksuit and an odd hat. It turned out she was a member of the Jordanian royal family and was going home during a uni break and couldn't fit the hat and boots in her luggage.

cherrypied · 09/04/2023 11:32

Flights are either freezing or roasting never just right!

Ryanair and EasyJet are often boiling when you first get on (esp if delayed on the runway)

they only get colder when in the air IMO

RampantIvy · 09/04/2023 13:16

I have never flown with either airline @ShirleyPhallus

iwannascream · 09/04/2023 13:47

I'm wearing jeans, top, cardie, jacket and trainers when i fly to the Canaries in June. I'm always cold on a plane hence the cardie.

userxx · 09/04/2023 13:55

Maxi dress or maxi skirt, really comfortable for sitting around for hours.

Ryan air...... boiling!

Germolenequeen · 09/04/2023 14:15

I like to feel comfy but also a bit "put together" so when I fly later this month to Venice (to start a cruise 🥳) I'm wearing

Mid blue Levis - grey t shirt and cardigan with hood if dry getting on plane - or light jacket if wet - navy pashmina that I can use in a variety of ways according to temp on plane - metallic cross body & belt - navy leather Supergas on my feet.

Never sandals for safety reasons and also because it would be just my luck for someone (me probably) to drop a case on my toes.

On the way home (depending on weather forecast in Dublin) I might wear a navy maxi - again with the Supergas.

Germolenequeen · 09/04/2023 14:19

That's light grey not dark

You should count yourself lucky for that then!
