Anyone put a double bed in a very small room - any regrets?

My DS is 20 and has the smallest bedroom. He currently has a single bed but wants his girlfriend to be able to stay over sometimes.

We could just about put a double bed in his room, but there would only be about a 30/40 cm gap between the bed and the wall where the door into the room is. We have already changed the door so that it opens onto the landing to give him maximum space so that wouldnt be a problem.

I have suggested a small double but he is over 6 foot and well-built and thinks that wouldn't be much better than a single. He is adamant that he is happy to sacrifice (almost all the) floor space for a bigger bed.

I have said that we will need to check if a double can actually be manoeuvred into the room, and that he would have to be in charge of trying to change the fitted sheet, but am just wondering if anyone has put a (too) big bed into a small room and regretted it?

Could you suggest one of those beds which pull out to form a double when needed?

I think I’m mostly wondering why a 20-year-old living at home isn’t already changing his own sheets but that wasn’t what you asked!

So, the door can open and he can get into bed? And still have room for a wardrobe or chest of drawers etc? And he’s happy to sacrifice all the space? I’d say OK then.

Is there space to hoover? It could get quite gross if not.

We have. Ds (18) has the smallest room and a king size bed. He loves it, there’s more benefit to him having a big bed than floor space. There’s just enough room to get the hoover round. To be honest if he’s in his room he’d be laid in bed anyway so doesn’t really need floor space like he did when he was little.

We've done this in the past and liked it. It makes a cozy room. You can put shelves up, tv on the wall and raise the bed for storage.
Is there a reason you are not thinking about using a single bed with a pull out single bed underneath it. There are some good quality ones. Your son could leave it as a double as much as he wanted but it would be more flexible than a double. He presumably will leave home at some point and you may not want a full double once he leaves.

I saw someone who did this and had a coathook style wardrobe if that makes sense. I'll try and find a link.

We build a bed base that acts as storage. Our double is about 3 feet raised off the ground. There's also a self built fitted wardrobe with shelves under. We have next to no floor space and I have to use a small set of steps to get into bed but there was no other option. We make it work.

I have and it's better tbh less to keep Rudy. I got him a double from okra with drawers underneath for extra storage and he has a built in wardrobe. Got his hug tv and PlayStation in there he's happy as Larry

CornishTiger · 06/04/2023 21:04

@Cuppaand2biscuits those are genius!

eleflump · 07/04/2023 07:55

Thanks - the room is L- shaped and he has quite a big wardrobe in there so no worries on that front.

I think a single with another one that pulls out from underneath to make a bigger bed would be the same as two three foot beds, and so would definitely not fit as we are squeezing in a four foot six double.

Hadn't thought about hoovering though - that might need to be a consideration!

I would do it. My DH is really tall and he can't stand sleeping in a single even if he's on his own. I think if he had a bed that can turn into a double he'd end up having it as a double all the time anyway because he'll sleep so much better like that even when his girlfriend isn't there.

He'll just have to be tidy and economical about how much stuff he has, which might not be a bad thing!

HelpsHeal · 07/04/2023 08:11

My DS has a 4 ft double. He's 6ft 3 and says it's fine, but prior to that he and gf used to aware his single and insist that was fine too!

When you're young and it's not every night, I think it's OK.

I'd like to have the cash to buy a house with a bedroom big enough for a king sized bed. Instead I have DH's up down desk instead of a bedside table. I can't see that changing soon - when DS1 leaves home I'll be able to creep into his bedroom for a bit more space 🙂
