Games to play with elderly mother

I’m looking for ideas of games to play with my mum to keep her entertained and ‘keep her brain working’ as she puts it. Her hands are very arthritic so she can’t hold playing cards (or small playing pieces), otherwise I’d be looking at games like whist and rummy, or possibly slightly less complicated than that, but more challenging than snap. Need to be playable by two people, although occasionally there might be more, and not take too long to complete. Someone suggested Rummikub which looks promising, but they did say it takes a long time with just two people.
thanks for suggestions!

Boggle?

Code name duet - cooperative game, good for word association and thinking. Only one person needs to handle the cards

Yatzi
Cribbage
Dominoes

What about dominos?

I was going to suggest boggle, if she can write still. Or Upwards, which is like scrabble but you build up the tiles.

We play Bananagrams with my mum. She is 89. Speed is not on her side but it’s more forgiving than Scrabble. Also Beggar My Neighbour.

What about a chess set with really large pieces? We've got a beautiful marble one that's an ornament as much as it is a game. We do use it though. Could probably get similar with chequers/Chinese chequers

Thanks again everyone, some really great suggestions here x

Shut the box is great for all ages and can be played alone also

We play Wordle with a pen and paper - would work well on a mini whiteboard. First person chooses a word and then just ticks/crosses letters as appropriate. We put a line for right letter/wrong place. It’s also a good pub game.

5 second rule, we played it with all ages

Scrabble.

My grandad (late 90s) plays variations of dominos including one he really enjoys called chicken foot.

But I’d definitely recommend Quirkle.

can she manage chess with a large set?

Scrabble? Backgammon? Have a trip to the charity shop and try a new game each week? WII fit? Xbox do a motion sensor game kit too called Kinect? After all physical movement is still important too.

Baldieheid · 09/04/2023 10:04

Backgammon.

Yahtzee is always on our list, as is scrabble. Small pieces though...
