Aaaarrggghh! 7 unsuccessful interviews. What to do?

Just got the call saying I was unsuccessful at interview AGAIN!

I even shelled out for a new trouser suit and shoes for this one!

These are just admin roles which I have years of experience in.

Always the same thing - you were great but the role was given to someone already working in the area (NHS x 2 interviews), or someone had more current experience, or not the right fit etc.

I really need a job as resigned from last one in February. So frustrated and getting worried now. Last job I got with first interview and they called me to offer within an hour.

Whats the most amount of interviews you have had before you got a job, just to make me feel a bit better?

Think of each interview as good practice and a lesson learnt.

I went through a phase of not getting the job, it was so disheartening. I decided to analyse each question and work out which one had let me down, in some cases it was more obvious than others. I was trying to find my perceived weakness.

I then practiced answering that question with a better answer. And I gathered data on my perceived weakness so I could asap say 'on this topic I have achieved x'

I did then get the job, in an area that focused on the 'weakness'

It will come and your suit will be totally worth it Flowers

P.s I was probably also on 7 interviews at this point, several of which were final rounds where it was me vs one other Angry

Keep going, you'll get something.

Make sure you ask for honest and specific feedback after each one.

Sympathising. At least you are getting one step further than I am.

Used to love my job but things have changed last 18 months. Finally bit the bullet towards end of last year and applied for an amazing job locally (small town - not many of these come up!) V narrowly missed out and I am still totally gutted about it.

I have applied for loads of other jobs since (only going for public sector type jobs) and not even getting an interview? Again only admin-y type things that I could do in my sleep - have 20 years of experience - and yet not even pulling an interview? Its so shit.
Any my mood with my current employer is off the charts bad because I feel like I have one foot out the door mentally.

user1471543094 · 06/04/2023 15:52

Also it is bloody soul destroying having to fill in form after form to apply for anything.
WHY can they not just accept a CV?! And maybe ask you to develop essential criteria aspects or something.

Piffpaffpoff · 06/04/2023 15:56

I'm on a run of 3 with no successful outcome - all have given specific, constructive and very helpful feedback which I am actioning but it's so frustrating isn't it?

I am doing what @SaltyGod has suggested - treat each new interview as an opportunity to try out new answers or focus on specific areas I might have missed or not been as strong on in previous ones. After each one, I try and record any new types of questions or scenarios they have asked and make sure I have a good answer banked for that in future. And I just keep plugging on

I had 5 unsuccessful ones this year, then had 3 companies fighting over me last week. I’ve accepted a new role and got myself a 20% payrise as well. It’s disheartening but keep going. You’ll get there. Definitely asked for detailed feedback

user1471543094 · 06/04/2023 16:05

For the other responders - were yous in employment when applying? Its so awkward to get time off for interview - especially if going for more than one?!
My current work almost need a full written explanation as to why you even want your annual leave - random days off are not appreciated.

20% - wowzers!!

Same OP.

The "you aren't a great fit" is usually an age discrimination thing.

Last week I had "sorry we went with another candidate who had no responsibilities outside of work so could be more flexible"

  1. I didn't mention I had children so they FB stalked me. Standard I guess

  2. they're going to work the successful candidate into the ground and I'm glad I avoided such a horrible toxic workplace

I was told to my face that I was old for digital marketing! 😳 jeez thanks.

Keep plodding on.

Myogapants · 06/04/2023 16:14

Also the local authority made me go through a 14 page application form, 3 interviews, 2 pre interview references to then tell me they had ALREADY filled the role 4 weeks prior to an internal candidate.

Fucking waste of everyone's fucking time. Assholes 😂

Do you know how awkward it is asking for a pre interview reference when you still work in your current job?? I'm so fucking annoyed still.

Assholes. 😂

daisydalrymple · 06/04/2023 16:14

Given you’re going for admin roles, could you register with a temp agency in the meantime? Sometimes it’s as simple as a gap on your cv. You might then get a bit of short term varied experience to draw on too. Good luck!

HelpsHeal · 06/04/2023 16:20

Why did you resign from the last job with nowhere to go and how do you answer that question? You need a good answer because IME (and presumably others') the reason often becomes apparent when they start the next job. It's rarely a good thing.

I'm afraid I'd take the feedback with a pinch of salt, they're just saying "something". They're not going to make it too personal

FortyFacedFuckers · 06/04/2023 16:51

Op I work in the NHS can I ask what band you are looking for?

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 19/07/2023 20:51
  1. Fucking. Years.

7 years of interviews and rejection to finally break into the animal care sector.

Level 2, 3, 4 vocational qualifications
A Bachelor's degree
A Master's degree

And a minimum wage job, but I'm finally in the sector I love!

PonyPatter44 · 19/07/2023 20:55

I don't suppose you're in Buckinghamshire, by any chance? I am DESPERATE for admin staff, literally crying out for people. Unfortunately because its civil service, its not brilliantly paid and people don't apply.
