Double vs small double for teen

Hello everyone,

I am moving into my "first" ever proper home in a couple of months and becoming a bit overwhelmed with all the stuff that I need to get.

DS, 12, will be having his first proper bedroom at the new place (we live in a very small 1 bed flat). He has a single bedroom at the new place but it is a decent size. Not as big as a double bedroom but he could fit two single beds as a stretch in the new place.

I'm not sure if I should get him a small double bed or a double bed? A double bed will fit but I would want space for the wardrobe, desk and chair and... (what else do you need for a teen room?)

@lsanny I don't think you can base the space needs of a young to GCSE teenager on what might happen when they are older or have moved out. He will need the space for years before a partner may stay over
He's 12. He may want a partner to stay over when he's 16? That's 4 years.

Small doubles are great, they are becoming more popular now so shops like dreams/bensons etc sell more of their beds in that size.

Dunelm is great for fitted sheets, then we use double duvets.

But a small double would fit in well and he would have space for a wardrobe, a table, a chest of draws and a small table.

Why are you even questioning? This is a great solution. Why even doubt it?

I would go for a single bed .

My 2 kids have small doubles as they wouldn't fit a double in their rooms. Age 16 and 19.

My youngest (DS 12) has the box room and I got the biggest bed I could that would fit with desk and gaming chair. I did have to get it specially made but my worry was, boys grows massively from 12-18 so didnt see point in getting a single bed which he would grow out of realy quickly.
But as others have said, if you have to get a single, get a longer one so he can lie straight.

Who the hell furnishes a 12 year old's bedroom with a view to future partners staying the night? 🤦🏼‍♀️

That's a really weird thought when buying a bed for a 12 year old.

My 16 year old has a small double,we bought it him when he was 13 ,his rooms not really big enough for a normal double ,but the small double suits him perfectly

That's a bit weird ,I know 16 year olds do.have sex but I cant imagine encouraging my16 to.have a girl.stay over just yet!

What about a double bunk bed? Double on top and then space underneath for desk etc?

Came on to say this. You can have desk or bean bags etc underneath

RinklyRomaine · 06/04/2023 17:53

My kids have small doubles including 13DD. They are perfect. Space enough, the rest of the room isn't overtaken, storage underneath but plenty of space for desk, drawers and wardrobe. Just use double bedding.

The majority don't grow bigger then a single bed?

Adults can also sleep on these!

As I am at the moment.

itispersonal · 06/04/2023 17:57

We got a small double for my 10 yo when we did her room for similar reasons. Easier for someone else to sleep on it comfortably but also allows for her to have more room in her bedroom.

We got bed from b&q and mattress off Amazon. Combined about £200

WimbleOfWombledon · 06/04/2023 18:01

DS is over 6 foot and has a small double in his room. It's great because it's plenty big enough for him - he was not comfortable in a single- and wasn't expensive. We got the bed with mattress from Argos and the 'small double' fitted sheets from dunelm mill. He has a normal double duvet though.
