Hair colour/grey hairs wwyd?

I am 45, and greying. Natural colour mid brown, lightens a lot with the sun.

I can't afford to go to a salon for nice highlights which is what I'd prefer.

So have been colouring chocolate brown at hone, it's a reddish brown. But I'm really not happy with it. The regrowth is horrid.

Any suggestions? I'll try to add a pic.

My hair is roughly the same colour and I do a light brown - Garnier do a nude one 6N which is great as it adds different tones to my hair. The 'experts' always say go a lighter shade so maybe the chocolate brown is too dark so regrowth is more obvious. No idea really if that's true.

Hope you find one you like.

I'm a similar age/hair colour but have been grey since my 20s and used to colour my own hair as you are doing and also hated the regrowth. I went blonde in the end to try and get less of a regrowth line but didn't really work. I've come to terms with it a bit more now and since lock down had decided to just grow it out. But then had a change of heart when it made me feel too old! Basically what I've settled on now is getting a mix of high and lowlights that disguises it a bit. I've discovered that, since the regrowth is less visible, I only need it done a couple of times a year ago although it's expensive, I don't have it as a regular cost. But you have to be comfortable with the grey showing through a bit, also I suppose it helps if you're hair doesn't grow that fast 🤣

I'm wondering whether to try the local college, they do vastly reduced cuts, colours etc with their students.

@Frosty1000 thanks, I've ordered a couple of those to try.

@Sunnydays60 my hair grows really fast! I'm going to try the colour suggested above first. Then may venture to the college. The trouble is, not only can't I not afford the ££ but I hate the time at the salon.

I'm 43 and going grey. It looked ridiculous dark brown because the greys really stood out against the dark dye.

I bleached mine myself and now colour it bright colours. It's currently pink. If I'm going to go to all this effort, I might as well have fun with it.

A lighter shade of brown
Ask a friend to apply the colour covering grey area firstly.
Mine is going a more silver grey.
I have changed shades to see which I like, always the lighter shades personally.

@Legocurlers I did just think if I could pull it off I'd just cut really short, bleach then colour but....I can't.

Maybe try a cooler toned light brown? The red tones will create a contrast with the grey, but an ash brown will blend better.

ememem84 · 06/04/2023 18:45

I’ve just gone an ashy brown with a bit of lilac. Although hairdresser did it for me

trickyfriendsone · 06/04/2023 18:58

Your natural colour looks a bit more ashy/neutral than the warm colour you're using. Maybe try going a shade or 2lighter with a neutral undertone to see if that helps the greys blend a bit better

Bemyclementine · 06/04/2023 19:02

Yes, its definitely more dull than the colour.

Try Josh Wood colour, imo it’s the best at home colour and you can warm it up / cool it down with add ins - more expensive than supermarket dye but way less than salon - good luck
